Play well, speak well and cooperate/help and your karma goes up as players +1 you.
Play badly, AFK, rage and don't help your team and the karma goes down as they -1 you.
Well, that's the idea. In practice, damaging enemies with carriers, subs, torpedoes, radar, hydroacoustic search or just not playing to your teammate's ideals or tactics (however silly they may be) will also get you negative karma.
Even saying hello at times may secure you a thumbs down, as some folk seem to prefer to treat co-op as SP it seems...
