good way to find out certian thign like pro cn of ships and revies is the worlds of warships wiki. http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/World_of_Warships
You may wait until then trying out other lines for now.
oh, the only redeeming factor the new york has is that it has much improved AA guns
I mostly agree with you but the New Mexico at T6 used to be good (although possibly powercrept as I haven't played her in a long time) as is the Colorado if you can actually get into a decent position before the game ends, otherwise totally agree.
As to OP, most ships are a slight downgrade when you first buy them if the last tier was fully upgraded, they only normally overtake the last tier once fully upgraded themselves.
New Mexico was decent-ish if only because you had more guns so an increased chance to hit something, as well as it being moderately faster than the average US low-mid tier BB.
Colorado is a steaming pile of junk that i cant wait to freeXP past because its a useless slow bulletsponge, and one that absolutely doesnt have a place in tier 7 where it regularly faces BB's that are much faster, maneuvrable and accurate than itself.
I actually heard that before I unlocked it, so was hugely surprised when I did quite well in her and even had a bit of fun, think I have about a 60%ish WR and some 100k+ scores in her. But she was soon sold once I unlocked the North Cal.
I'm on the Colorado. It's very polarising. On the one hand, the guns are good (When they can be convinced to actually hit the target), the AA is good, and it's surprisingly nimble.
On the other, it's got terrible armor everywhere that isn't the citadel, which means you take full pen damage from everything, even while directly bow on. Light cruisers and even the British and Japanese gun boat DDs can have a field day with you if you stray too close, and even equal tier BBs can cut right through your bow plating without worry.
Then there's the speed. It's a serious problem. The first is the most basic, you have serious trouble positioning yourself correctly. If your team is winning, you can honestly spend the entire game taking 15km+ pot shots at things because you cannot close the gap on anything without it dying. If your team is losing, then by the time you're even relevant your team is already at a disadvantage and much of your backup has already taken a pounding.
Combine the two, and this ship dies very quickly if you make one mistake. Put yourself too close to more than 3 enemy ships, and you're going to be at the bottom before you can break off due to their constant penetrations regardless of angling and your complete inability to open the distance on them.
Edit after playing it: First game in colo in probably 2 yrs. Double strike and dreadnaught. I admit i didnt play it stock. Seems ok if slow. Actually pretty mobile if you discount the speed, and the guns are good.

My in game tag is not the same as my Steam tag by the way :)
Also, pray to god a carrier with 40+ ships (t7) doesn't target you, cause ships it's supposed to be against have literally 3-4X your AA, your BB gets melted.
Edited you, hope u dont mind - more readable now.
If you are bottom tier, then your role isnt to carry the team, it is to help the team. That said people often ignore ppl -2 tiers and show side, so enjoy their citadel. |Team game.
