Edit: And try not to ram people so much, heh. It may not do much damage, but the system is cumulative, so even if the only ally damage you do is accidentally bumping and grinding from time to time, eventually you will hit the cap and be turned pink.
Also, don't let people get to you about it. If someone gives you a hard time, just tell them you're supporting a breast cancer foundation or something. You know you haven't been intentionally shooting teammates, so you shouldn't feel shamed about it. If anything, it should just be encouragement for you to learn to pay attention to your minimap, and your ally positions and courses around you. It takes time, but you'll get there. :)
Yeah, that'll help someone avoid my mistake, along with learning to look before they launch. Unless I already know it's safe, I try to keep the habit now of always checking my minimap and surroundings briefly before launching torps (regardless of what ship I'm in), to ensure none of my teammates are going to be at risk of driving into them.
That said, it isn't an always thing, to launch your torps at close range. Area denial with a so-called "wall of skill" is a valid - if annoying - tactic in the game, as is launching into smoke or known camping spots at long range to flush someone out. So there are uses for blindly fired torpedoes, even if they're situational. And then there's the Asashio, but that's another bag of apples, heh.
