Still Sucks one month later
A freaking CV was literally in front of me couldn't ping it said ping will be cleared why? wt f WG You really screwed the pooch with your mechanics for subs.

CVs have an automatic damage control that will trigger whenever on fire/sonar pinged/flooded which tends to have a quick reload and decent duration (would have to login and check to get you the numbers if you want them). If you were that close to the CV then surely you could just manually torp it rather than needing the homing to work?

Edit: Went and checked and it seems all CVs have a 60s damage control duration (during which time no more fires/floods/pings will stick) and it has a 90s reload. So obviously after your first ping no more would apply for a bit.

You were trying to attack a CV, they are off limits targets according to WG. :P

I kid of course but as mentioned above they have auto repair parties that last a really long time.

Oh, you're living in the past my friend. Now subs are! Hydro can't even spot them. The same Hydro that can spot a torpedo on the other side of an island... :steamfacepalm:

Wait seriously they can't!!!!!?!?!?!?! So the whole point of IRL hydrophones which was to detect submarines.....doesn't work in the game to detect submarines.

WOW!

Only if they are at maximum depth though. Or did they change that? Not quite up to date here since hydro is always on when a sub is near me anyway.

The tradeoff is that they are blind and slow while at that depth. Quite happy with the sonar-CV interaction btw since subs are pretty much immune to CVs if they are paying attention. Obviously the CV can drop fighters around the subs location to force them to keep using battery, but its really hard to do much else unless its very late in the game and the sub is recharging battery on the surface.

As far as I've seen hydro detects them on all depths minus the maximun one, radar detects them on periscope depth

in a ship if pinged hit repair quick it blocks the ping or atleast the second secured ping.

CV DCP is 60s.

Actually it will often pay to wait a bit. If the sub is out on far range, your damcon will be off quick enough for a double-ping to follow long before the torpedoes reach you. Generally speaking, if you're in a ship with active hydro: Damcon and dodge as soon as the sub torps become visible. You'll need to be at speed starting the dodge though, otherwise many ships will be way too clunky to actually get away from the (or at least most) torps. Buggers are still awfully fast.
Doesn't hurt to do some dodging immediately of course. Especially if you're in a BB, there is a chance it might be the non-guided citadelling torpedoes after all.

I'm not sure, I refuse to play them, but I know my hydro NEVER worked on them. Can't say what other circumstances may have been involved.

From the most recent dev blog on subs involving hydro:
we don't plan on changing Hydroacoustic Search so that it can detect subs at maximum depth. Please note that it still detects them at all other depths.[blog.worldofwarships.com]

Fair enough. It's still stupidly annoying. If they move, it should hear them at ALL depths. If they don't move? Maybe not.

Bad show here bro. If you don't know and just want to SUB hate - take off the mod hat.
