This vs playing through the Wargaming launcher?
I started with WoT and WoWS a long time ago and have heard that if you uninstall that and re-install through steam that you lose everything. Is that true? Is there a way around that? I think it would be nice to have it contained within Steam but I don't want to lose all my progress.

No. installing it through steam basically makes a new account made for steam.
Currently there is no fix to allow you to play a wargaming account that wasn't made through launching it through steam.
Technically you'd have two different accounts doing that.

Well that's a bummer

Sometimes there are work arounds, so maybe that'll pop up soon, haven't seen one in sometime though

You can still add the games to Steam as "non-Steam" games. That way you still get the overlay - it's what I do.

The overlay isn't the concern - I've got Steam funds that I'd like to apply towards WoWS, and I'm not making a new account and losing 5 years worth of accrued assets just to do that.

Hopefully a work-around is patched in.

The work around wouldn't let you use steam funds. In order to make it work, certain files needed to be deleted or changed. It allowed people to use the Steam version, but nothing on Steam worked other than the overlay. No achievements, no funds etc
