Change the colors
Allies get green pics by their name, and enemies get that orange-red, which is great.
But for some reason, the ally ones sometimes change to an orange-red hue as well, which is absolutely confusing. I keep getting teamkill penalties for firing at ships that AREN'T GREEN, only to find out it was an ally after the fact.
I can't even explain how infuriating that is, and how asinine it is to make ally markers change to that color. If there's a need to change the color of markers to something besides the normal green for allies, DON'T make it a hue similar to the enemy. I'm not colorblind, but in the middle of a fight there should be a noticeable difference in color for ships, especially when there are about six of them all dancing around each other in a capture zone or around some clustered little islands.

I have never experienced anything like that.
Do you have replays of games where you did a teamkill? Maybe someone went just right in front of you and was hit by your shells while you were firing at an enemy.

It's not that (though that happens too sometimes), I'm talking about how the little triangle w/ stripes marker changes color, I think it's to signify that they're being shot at or something. But I turn around and suddenly see an orange/red marker on a ship crossing my path and I think its an enemy.

As i said, i have never experienced anything like that. The ship icons never change color for me (unless the ships is sunk and the icon is greyed out).
Do you use any mods? Does it happen every match? Do you use the advanced combat interface to always display health bars of enemies and allies?

Team mates can turn from green to pink to orange based on team killing. If someone went from green to pink then that means they did a significant amount of friendly fire damage to a team mate. This is the same when going from pink to orange.

As for you being able to distinguish the difference between friend and foe, I cannot help you out with that.

Enemy is red. Check in options that you havent engaged colourblind mode though.

Never seen anyone turn orange in 12,000 games. Pink is the TK colour.

Pink is the color someone gets when doing a good amount of damage to someone.

Orange is the color that appears where they TK'ed on purpose while also being pink.

Really? I've only seen them explode from reflected damage

If you only play PvP, you won't see Orange players on your team as they are restricted to co-op only. Space Mikey is sort of right, but it takes a lot of team damage and/or afking to go orange. I've never seen anyone turn orange during a match so I assumed they would only change at match end. However, if the OP is correct then I'm wrong on that point. OP must be very unlucky with teammates if this happens on a regular basis!

Hate to necro this couple month thread, but I just got my first penalty for not even realizing that I apparently shot an ally. I don't have a recording of it, but it kinda sucks to be labeled pink for attacking an enemy and not even realizing I also hit an ally. Don't know when during the co-op match exactly, but still. It's not like I purposefully tk or attack allies.

Well, the penalty means you either do some damage a lot of the time, or you did a lot of damage on one occasion to an ally. Either way get on with the game and ignore it.

I do not like the pink color, i killed once my team mate by accident, reason he seemed red in a battle vs 6 me, red was over it all, in that pink seem like red team.
World of tank you do use light blue, it work even better. it like say carefull foes this dude is might a team killer. Pink are more like shoot me sign, sec. torpedo are not easy to aim and you often get pink for hitting accident reason the foe, for some reason do not look out for a ship their witten i shoot torps all over the ship.
