If you want to have more ships than you have, you will need to obtain more ship slots. You can get them in some missions, but otherwise you need to buy them with the premium currency, the Doubloons.
The normal cost is 300 per slot, but they currently have a discount and only cost 75.
From the above pic, it's clear that you don't have enough doubloons for a new slot.
But, if you're new, you should have some free slots available. Just click on "With Slot", and you can change it to "Without Slot".
You can also sell old ships in port to make room for new ones.
P.S. Have you used an invite code before account level 3? You get a bunch of free stuff, including 80k free EXP, two premium ships and a couple of slots.
I'm level 5 already so rip ships, slots and xp, but thanks for the info!
Also when you start selling ships with upgrades — you can either pay doubloons to demount upgrades (25 per one) or choose to sell them for credits(50% price), notice that.
