better armor than the rest
shorter range than the rest
meme level AP
HE sucks beyond words
also just because you have shorter range doesnt mean you can just run in
you are also slow AF
keep medium range from targets
Check also all basic tutorials in utube videos made by WG (devs of WoWS), it’s useful to understand mechanics of the game.
Play BB (Battleships & Battlecruisers, no BC class - for battlecruisers - in WoWS) at start is better and u have more moving marge (of mistakes) with all hp u have with...
less easy to learn in CA/CL (light & heavy cruisers) or DD (destroyers - wich can be gunboat or torpedoboat) coz mistakes cost a lot of hp and u die very fast from them compared to BBs.
But beside, I also advise u to play all 4 types of ships, even just to understand their gameplay a minimum and be able to use that knowledge later with ships u master and like the most.
In anycases, stay patient, learning curve is pretty long in WoWS and it takes between 3000 & 5000 games to really reach a decent skill and know everything (5000random games expected from Jingles & QuickyBaby point of view, perso I think it seems a bit much but averagely on thousands players it’s probably true).
But for now Germans are good choice, it’s a good way to start.
Yet their real BB “op potential” starts with tier8 Bismarck and after (or t8 Tirpitz Premium too but I advise to learn the game at least some months more before buy a Premium, u need more knowledge & skill before play tier7 games or above, with Premium ships or not).
Koenig or Bayern are decent ships but certainly not the best t5 & t6 BBs.
For cruisers until t5, I definitely advise u to do French cruisers.
After they tend to go down in the average, but tier 3 to 5 French cruisers are great !
German cruisers are excellent all the line, mostly in top tiers.
US StLouis t3 or Russian t3 Bogatyr are very efficient also !
Both are certainly in top3 of all tier3 cruisers.
Let DDs for later, such more tricky to play (Germans DDs are all excellent like the V25 t2, and Chinese Longjiang t2 is very good too).
But do at least 250to500games before start DDs lines seriously.
And CVs are always useful to try, even just to understand point of view of carrier’s players u could meet as enemy or teammates.
Plenty of players dislike CVs, I disagree that’s pretty interesting and much more “tactical”, even if it’s totally different of others ships gameplay...
But BBs to start is a good idea.
Japan BBs are excellent, mostly tier5 BC Kongo (best of all t5 & t6 BBs imo) it’s also a good way to start with BBs, such as Germans.
Globally I prefer to touch everything (+1600random games done actually, I started 90% of all shiplines from all nations and sit around t5 to t7 everywhere + some t8 Premium) to have an exhaustive sight of all the gameplay and u learn much more easily & rapidly assets/weaknesses of ships u meet next as enemy... but it takes much more time ofc... up to u to see.
Anyway start by BBs (Germans & Japanese) is a good way to do and progress.
Good luck :)
I would love if the developers put in some tier IV to VII scenarios in for a break from the monotony.
One thing I would love explained is how XP is awarded. Some battles I do practically nothing and get heaps of XP, others I do a whole lot of damage, hit ship citadels (I've been going with AP since an above poster said HE on German BBs sucks so no fires or disabled modules) but XP seems almost random.
Finally; I wish there was a defence against torpedoes or torpedoes that fail to detonate (played silent hunter games quite a bit and torpedoes seemed to bounce off the hull as they didn't trigger, or malfunction in ways that caused them to veer wildly off course. With this torpedoes seem to be the final "f**k you" from dying ships, all you can really do is try your best to avoid them.
War emergency power would be nice too, though maybe it exists for destroyers, I am a noob right.now after all.
Do u know Cold Water video game ?
About Cold War period sub warfare, I LOVE that game !
If u don’t know it yet, I advise u to try. I am sure u will like it’s a great game too.
About PvE, well don’t take that result with too much trust. Lol AI there is pretty weak. Random is definitely more a challenge.
I guess I did ~80 coop games, mostly at start, all of them have been won (still at 100% wr in coop actually) and with 7.8kill ratio if I remember well.
But truly, it means few thing.
It’s good to learn to master basic gameplay and UI etc.
And it’s also useful to earn credits easily in game if u need some, including far later.
But level of random battles (vs others players) and rewards from in xp is quite different..
About XP earned, u get much less in coop than what random battles could offer, but it’s also much more « no mercy » there lol (and not obviously bcoz of enemy skill, chaotic own team is more often the cause of defeats than real op enemies in my XPs).
About how XP is earned, it’s mostly dmg done.
And tier of the ship concerned has a big influence too.
If u do much dmg as low tier and win the game, u can earn significant amounts of XP.
Kill(finish ships) doesn’t allow much more in comparison i guess.
And cap or reboot enemy caping (by hitting them) allow u some XP too, but much less than dmg done.
Since last 0750 patch, first spotting (or after 90sec unspotted target) allow u some xp too.
But I assume it’s comparable to cap or defending cap amounts of XP.
Idk rules in detail, but it’s dmg done and low/top tier concerned the main both factors to earn much XP.
I advise u to check videos of WG about how HP of ships is calculated, angling of armor, etc.
It’s definitely one basic mechanic u need to know/remember to do dmg...
It’s a game about WW2 period, so no modern technologies to help us in WoWS (still an arcade game, but historical datas of ships and conception is pretty sensed globally).
About torps, best is anticipation and don’t sail straight line if u know enemy DD nearby or generaly if u are in first line.
About Chinese torps (only for China), they have deep water torps in mid & top tier DDs instead of all others torps from others nations... these deep water torps can NOT hit an other DD.
It’s also something to remember.
But some premium Chinese DDs have the classic torp instead of deep version, so pay attention to that nuance between both types of torps soon as u reach mid tier games.
And there are scenarios in WoWS but u need to reach a certain level to have access to.
Don’t remember wich (lvl11 or 12 maybe ? Something like that)
There are 15lvls max, and each unlock new features of the game, including missions/scenarios (played in PvE), etc.

Some people say, get german as they have good armor, yes they do , but terrible dispersion.(wide shots). Now with the british bb and french bb they are good to .
British BB have high fire chance shells, others have 30 they have 40, so you can set more fires on ships with them. German line is good but dont get stuck on them,
Watch the notser vid on "dynamic crosshair", its the only one to use.
Always practise in Co-op as you dont loose. you upskill in points and experience as you learn.
Specially manual drops for carriers from tier6 onwards
see my post on "How do i spec up my ship in WOW"
I like the PvP but grinding for a tier VI BB is like trying to march through neck deep mud, which is why I had suggested they add lower level scenarios.
With random battles you can only play so much in the same ship before it gets extremely boring. I can only imagine random battles against bots would get boring faster.
I like the game but locking XP to a ship means you are pretty much "stuck" in one ship for hundreds of battles, which can be soul destroying if you do it for days on end.
The game is so historically accurate that even a "historical battle" mode with players and bots on both sides set in certain WW2 naval battle locations would be an excellent break from the grind.
I would love to see a PvP "reinforcements for the HMS Hood" where an NPC or player Hood doesn't get blown to pieces and effectively turn it into a "defend the VIP" scenario, with the Hood being the VIP, there would be so many other historical battles that could be recreated and made to have potential alternate history endings (e.g. The Bismarck can either survive or be destroyed) as well as things like blockade missions "Intelligence has come in that there will be a major attack on the beaches of Normandy, your ships have been dispatched to stop the ships launching landing craft and sink their escorts"
It would be much more interesting than a number of ships clustered around a few capture points and would bridge PvP and PvE.
Please keep any helpful tips coming in too, I'm just giving my perspective to keep the thread alive and interesting and thanks for all the help thus far.
PS: XP must be calculated in a really complicated way, I remember I got 70K damage and only 500-700XP in a PvP battle, granted the battle was lost and the last 30k or so of damage was from me ramming an enemy BB as there was three of them and one of me, on fire and with about 1/10th HP left, I had expected at least 1k exp but I got much less than I thought I would.
Like in Atlantic Fleet ie.
Perso I jump from one shipline to an other and try to earn all first victory for all my ships (28 in my collection for now) everydays. So I never felt really bored by repetitive games yet.
It’s very rare I do more of 3 following games with the same ship, etc.
I think they should also create some battle modes like ie: « midway battle mode » where both teams (PvP) have 3 CVs each and 15vs15 players.
Or include maybe ww2 subs too.
I doubt they will at mid term, but maybe with time...
I hope next big step will be UK CVs, but it will take times either. ^^

Each nation is different and plays different. Some have great ships at a certain teir some don't. For instance the T4 German BB which you're at now kinda sucks imo. The T5 is great however. OIn the other hand the US T4 battleship is great but the 5 isn't so great.
but that could be interesting i think.
even just 1 or2 SS per team in random battles or a sub battle mode (DDs & CAs vs wolf pack) could be fun.
not sure about gunboats, not really revelant for high seas battle even if the idea could be interesting.
in warthunder they putted a new gunboat extension and its really dedicated to river or shores battles, not really a good idea to put them in same fight when enemies have BBs or heavy cruisers to face them lol.
but why not, a gunboat mode then maybe.
well, many options to improove the game again in the future if they want to :)
Back to you having 28 ships; I'm assuming you paid for premium currency for the ship slots? Not that I would judge you for that, some people pay £50 for a model battleship, why should paying money for 'model' ships you can sail pnline be any different?
However if I were to go for another ship line (most likely cruisers as DDs seem to require lots of practice) what nation would you recommend? Stick with Deutschland? IJN? US? Another country? (Insert joke about French ships having four different reverse speeds)
I liked the early German cruisers for the brawling ability of heaps of batteries in casemates though I feel another nation may be in order. Any ideas?
EDIT:
Been watching LOTS of the YouTube videos by the way, very helpful, especially on how AP works VS HE, the amusing cartoon series on what to not do and a few other things.
I did originally gove this game a negative review however the game has much more depth than already anticipated to I'll be removing it (saving it, to keep the parts I think should be included) and rewriting it as a positive as I love the game, didn't think that it was getting as many updates as I thought and will probably have more positive info to give to readers than negative, it just takes a lot of learning to master, has complex mechanics and gets monthly updates, everything to turn a (very tentative, I even said that I wished there was a neutral setting) negative review positive.
A positive and mature community who gives help when needed is excellent too, don't think I won't include that when I reupload a review. Your responses have been a thousand times better than the "hurr durr git gud" that other communities on the steam forums may have given. I really am thankful.
No, Not torpedoboats, gunboats wich was mostly naval artillery to support ground forces or survey rivers.
Torpboat is a kind of patrol boat.
Some models were fitted for the high seas yeah but that’s the exception and never they entered in classic naval battles as DDs did.
French destroyers was named « contre-torpilleurs » but that doesn’t involves torpboat to be part of naval fleets including BBs and cruisers...
DDs was adapted to hunt any kind of ship from smaller to bigger ones, but that doesn’t mean torpedoboats had their place in a classic naval fleet.
And when we make a distinction between torpedoboats & gunboats to refere as DDs in game, it’s to mention how they perform (with guns or torps as main asset), but nothing to deal with real torpedo boats like « small corvettes » and stuff like that.
Wich are river patrol boats or shores patrol boats or harbours naval security units, stuffs like that...
Yet, torpboats have not their place in a classic high sea fleet.
Rare cases where high seas torp boats were used was independently from any naval deployment and specificly as they wasn’t able to face firepower there of the enemy classic warships deployments (like Germans did in ww2 in the channel for example) except by stealthy and rapid raids, etc...
But for WoWS, the problem remains, any kind of very small corvettes or super fast torpboats have no real place in present game modes.
And in WT too, it involves only some kinds of corvettes, naval barges or torpboats but never mixed with big warships beside u see ?
Do not realist for WoWS I am afraid, it’s not coherent with the kind of naval warfare we are involved in present modes, etc
About ship slots, I earned some here or there and bought an other part.
Mostly 10 new ones at 50% last months (so 1500doubloons instead of 3k).
And next there are free slots from premium ships I bought (on 28, 8 or 9 are premium ships including some I received as gift).
It’s true it’s pretty expensive for what it is, but at 50% promo, still already that less. :p
Actually I still have 8 of these slots unused then I hold for further good ships to unlock then I already know I will want to keep for ever.
(On all 28+8slots I have, I guess I bought ~12to14 big max as total, the rest was given or linked with Premium ships)
But it was necessary to be able to start all ship lines, so I jumped on the 50% offer to buy all I needed when I seen it, etc.
For wich shiplines worth it, well depends on ur play style mostly.
I recommend Germans (all 3 lines).
French and Russian cruisers.
Japan BBs and later US BBs too (US very fun in top tiers only, but it’s hard until t6 with)
The hardest ones are probably UK cruisers to play, need a good skill but they are pretty good soon as u know what u do...
In fact all can be interesting, plenty of players love Japan DDs.
I chose Chinese & German DDs mostly (I am late in ♥♥♥ DDs don’t play much with, and not yet started US DDs, I wait to earn a capt lvl10 or even lvl6 to do it).
But depends mostly how u prefer to play first, I think...
Anyway germans are a trustful value, no doubt about it, and in all 3 shiplines.
U can’t be wrong at start to do Germans imo... 👌
