Hard to really explain the differences between them :) Invite codes don't benefit anyone except you, they look just like a code usually. So what you got in PMs were likely referral links.
It's not a big problem per se, the real one is that Steam updater uses a ton of temporary space during update, which takes longer and involves more disk operations.
The Steam Wallet is entirely the reason I want the steam version. I haven't played WoWS on PC at all yet so I lose nothing making a new account via Steam. The wallet makes paying for things much simpler for me to do, so any game I can get/put on steam and use the wallet I have done so.
