Means they don't work for a while, or work worse (engine/rudder with Last Stand), and only Damage Control can bring them back immediately.

I think How it Works series have covered that as well?
or is that something else
The sound I think you are describing is the one when you take massive damage. It usually means a citadel hit but can also be caused by numerous regular pens.
Actual module incapacitation is described by Ryuu above. Massive damage can coincide with incapacitated modules but is neither is caused directly by the other.
must have misunderstood then
usually module incapacitations the module thats damaged shows a little icon after getting hit
never really noticed that with incapacitation ribbons
will keep an eye out in the future to see if i can connect the two and the module icon showing up just grabs the attention better
That is when you take a lot of damage, mostly a citadel hit
guess i assumed my crew was shell shocked and incapacitated
instead its the devs assuming my hp bar going from full to a sliver is not obvious enough xD
BTW when you cause that yourself — you hear a corresponding voiceover, like tank-style "penetration confirmed", don't remember actual words.
