Still new and not sure of a few things.
So, I got a premium ship. I don't know where or now, maybe a container. Anyway, it was roughly the same as the cruiser I'd been playing, except couldn't be upgraded. Its icon had a wreath around it, which I figured was because it was premium. But now my other cruiser, that I researched and bought, has a wreath around the icon too. What does that mean? Is that when it reaches the end of being able to be upgraded?

Also, I see discussion of a training arena, but the only thing I can do is battle. How can I get into the training area?

White wreath just means elite status = everything researched, ship XP is elite XP which can be converted to FreeXP using doubloons (expensive, so only if you're really sure).
Golden means premium ship and they're effectively elite from the start since nothing to research.

So usually you want to sell your elite tech ships unless you like them or want them for something else. Or you're a collector.

Now there are two icons for premium ships — with wreath or chain. AFAIK initially it was to mean two flavors: special/rare/collector/event ship and regular premium ships. But in the end it got messed up because sometimes ships got sold later or became non for sale, so don't pay attention to the icon. Golden = premium. They still might be of somewhat different flavors, but hard to say that just by the icon.

Training mode requires account level 15(last) when clan battles become available, because it's intended for clan training (+other reasons).
You don't get anything for training battles, it's just for practice.

Coop battles are good enough when you want to practice in calmer conditions while still levelling the ship, commander, get credits. You get less but also coop battles usually are far faster too.

Here's a deeper answer for you :)

the wreath is when you bought all the upgrades available for it and the next ship in the line
basically to indicate that the ships finished/complete

more modes become available when you reach a higher lvl
dont remember which lvl the training thing unlocks
just continue playing and it should unlock, after you can select it the same way you switch between co-op or random

Awesome, thank you very much. I was thinking it was a low level thing, training needed.

and to indicate what ships are premiums, their name is in gold

Silver name with no wreath: Tech tree ship
Silver name with wreath: Tech tree ship with elite status (You've researched all modules and her successor. XP on this ship can now be converted into FXP using doubloons)
Gold name: Premium ship
