Low exp?
I survive to the end a fair amount, have 60 target hits, 1 - 3 ships destroyed, premium enabled and some paint that I think helps with exp gain. Sometimes I even cap a point or two. I only net 100 points if I'm lucky. I play a tier 6 german cruiser. What am I missing?

I read that if you play against AI you can get less exp. I play online with players but there may be some bots mixed in, I don't know. My next tier ship is around 70,000 points, thats around 700 matches if I am on the upper end of my 100 points.

I read about people getting 2000 points, What am I doing wrong?

You get two kinds of experience per match; experience for the ship you're using and its captain, and then free experience which can be used on anything. The smaller number is likely your free experience, which you don't get as much of. Check your results again.

Sounds like he's playing coop.

Maybe, but 100 exp per match is stupid low even for co-op. That's like the experience you get from loading into the match, shooting someone a couple times and then doing absolutely nothing for the rest of the match.

you're not alone buddy :)) the game I played just last night: 3 ships destroyed, nearly 50k damaged, 2 times assist capturing, top of the board and thanks to 50% exp bonus I reached 1200 exp :)) tier 5 hms emerald

I play always random and I can confirm this, the xp is awefully low. For example last match I played I made 50+ hits, one was a citadel hit, and I sunk an enemy cruiser. I still only got around 340 xp for that mission.

It's really depressing and feels like the xp gain is arbitrarily decreased to push us to buy premium, because when I still had it I constantly got 1000+ xp for every match even when I didn't destroy anything.

Please post your post-battle results screenshots with credits and XP tab open.

I will play a few rounds now and do that !
Ghojo Jan 9, 2018 @ 3:29am
So here are my screenshots of two rounds: https://imgur.com/a/EErVw

The first two are of the last battle, 685 xp. Better than before but still not very much considering I killed a battleship.

Second one is the highest xp I got in a single match so far. But with premium, that is usually what I got for the damage I caused in the first 2 screenshots.

It feels like premium acounts are double or tripple xp.

1st screenshot - that's quite small battle contribution, especially since that damage is only to battleships - you are awarded not on raw damage but on % of ship HP, so doing 13k to destroyers would give you more.
http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Economy (unfortunately english version of this article contains less details)

3rd screenshot - much better, though screens of Detailed report AND Credits and XP tab would explain more. Maybe you've only hunted BBs again.

As a cruiser you main victims are destroyers - mostly those spotted by allies, but sometimes if enemy does not have supporting battleships - you can simply pursue it while dodging torpedoes. Kuma has quite good speed for that. You can easily deal good damage to destroyers, but less so to battleships. When there's no destroyers around - deal with cruisers to let your team destroyers deal with battleships, that's how teamwork works in this game.

Premium account adds +50% XP and credits, some camouflages add 50-200% XP, there's a battle signal for 50% more.

There are other things that matter, like damage to ships of higher tiers give you more, but i hope that explains most of it.

Yes I used the xp flags and camouflage before, I am almost out of them.

And I don't feel like it was such a small contribution, I was already playing quite risky and aggressive. There is only so much you can do in pvp battles, where everyone plays on his own. I mean I also don't want to get blasted to pieces right away. :P

Second screenshot I forgot to capture the detail panel, sorry about that. As far as I remember, I destroyed a cruiser and did damage to a few cruisers and destroyers, and only 2 battleships.

Also I can't really hunt destroyers most of the time, as I then will immediately run into other cruisers or battleships (since everyone is running towards the same map spots).
What I can do would be to sit back and wait for single ships to come out and hunt these, but then the round is often already over.

My point is that I agree with the OP, the xp reward on nonpremium accounts is really low. Especially for people who have very limited time to play, it must seem to take forever to get to the higher tier ships or try out different ship. Especially if you want to try out the different nations.

Also let's not forget that some ships are really aweful (hello kawachi / myogi), but you have to grind with them anyway to get to a better ship.

I feel devs are not really greedy and don't force you into paying, but you should remember that they need to get paid and servers also cost money. Free players can access all the same content is the game, but they pay their time instead of their money. It's up to user to decide which thing he values more - time or money.

But everyone is free to play it however they like: you may as well buy one tier 8 premium ship and farm credits, free xp and commander XP using it, if you don't get tired same ship.

If you play rarely you have several options:
0) Buy premium time only on weekends, 1-3 days at a time.
1) Buy big premium pack, for example for 1 month. It comes with significant discount and would probably be close in cost to what you'd pay getting single days.
2) Buy premium ship. Especially if you don't really care about trying different nations, trees and tier and just want to smash :hee:
3) Buy camouflages/signal flags INSTEAD of premium time. They work per battle, so you can take long breaks between even single battles.

Really take a look how many options devs provide for players with different wallets and different free time :hee: I generally dislike f2p games a lot, but i feel they've made this game economic model as close to ideal as its possible for f2p game (that doesn't rely on sales of some loot boxes, keys, skins, etc).
jakman Jan 9, 2018 @ 6:50am
almost every f2p game is like this once you get to a level in a game you have to spend a really long time trying to move up or you pay for it to be done quicker. this game is just like the rest.
Ghojo Jan 9, 2018 @ 7:05am
Yes and it's somewhat fair, and it wouldn't be such a problem if the games weren't so repetitive.

Doing the same thing over and over and over again, for a few hundred times so you can get the next level ships isn't really that much fun.
If there were more varied gamemodes, the grind wouldn't be a problem at all.

At this rate, I am getting bored really fast of the game already, because it's always the same. Which is okay, because I can just jump in once a day or every few days for an hour or so and kill a few ships.
However that I seemingly make no progress in levelbuilding at all does make the experience a bit sour.

It also does NOT make me want to buy premium, because I feel like I am pushed to do it.

I personally think a business model where the players can buy cosmetics mainly (and premium ships in this case), while letting free players still level up fast enough on the free ships, is the better choice.
It encourages free players to stay (which a f2p game needs) and sales of premium items.

I find the premium items all to be really boring, and buying flags and +50% xp gain feels too "paytowin" to me, even though it's not in the eventual matches.

However I would love to buy cosmetics, like a permanent deep blue skin or a shark skin that I could add to my ships.

No, some of most despised f2p games are where you can't get some equipment without paying real money or would have extremely hard time doing so - pay-to-win ones.
Some force you to gamble buying loot boxes or grinding ages instead. There are also other kinds.

This game has none of such crap and no premium ammo like in World of Tanks. I like it for that.

I agree on that. But can't you buy loot boxes here too?
