Sailing and navigation (suggestion for developers)
I really love sailing in this game, but i miss (a LOT )some tools and (or) options in the map for Navigation

for example, to swicht the visibility of your boat on the map. That would be very good for me. One of the funniest things about SHIII was its map and navigation tools

the compass, the ruler, the pointer ...

That would be great, but there's a few things that need to happen until then:
1. Proper lighthouses
2. Binoculars, maybe with built in compass
3. A proper chart that opens full screen
4. A map that is oriented towards navigation.
5. All the associated tools for measuring distances and plotting angles on the chart

Would really love to see this, but i have a feeling it won't be any time soon

I fully agree, but until Richard will find time for such things, there are some workarounds.
E.g. you can use opencpn or qtvlm as a chart. Use the nmea-import to show your SA-boat position (updates every ten minutes, but is sufficient). With this great tool you can do all the navigation things you need. You can help to increase the number of proper lighthouses by creating them with the world editor (see examples of the community). In opencpn you can split the screen and use google earth. Updating with your boats position, google will follow your position (looks much better than the SA-world).

Wow, thanks for the suggestions. Didn't even think about looking up navigation software. Also, kinda disappointed to see that, unlike the US, Europe doesn't have much in the way of free charts.

Yes, you have all the charts in the US and in south america. For the rest of the world use the free opensea-maps. They don't show depth, but everything else is fine including lights etc.

1 Sailaway uses the openseamap database. If a lighthouse or a light is on this map. It has to be in sailaway. If it's not on openseamap and it's still on sailaway. It's because someone added it on sailaway with the world editor. Unfortunately the openseamap map is not as complete as the maps offered by NOAA to individuals, or the Shom maps.

The buoys around Guadeloupe are almost complete on sailaway

2 For binoculars, you can use the + and - keys (numeric keypad) to zoom in and out. You have a compass under the eye icon (the tactical view, the icon with a grid pattern).
5 you have a small tool to measure the distance and angle of your boat. (4th icons on the right side of the map)

4 A map that is oriented towards navigation???? I've never seen this option on a sailboat GPS! Do you have a GPS reference that does(link to a website or to a picture).

Zooming in and out is a bit clunky. Would just be better to press a button and use binoculars. Also, zooming in and out means you can't see the tactical view any longer. Not to mention that the tactical view is next to useless for navigation, as it is only accurate to the nearest 10 degrees, it is centred on the boat, not your view point, which means you cannot take bearings.

The idea is to not have the point of the ship on the map, and to use a compass instead. The map system as it exists now need not be removed. I'm sure that there are a lot of people that don't want to mess about with navigation. But in parallel to it, it would be nice to have an old fashioned chart, with some old fashioned chart tools, for those of us that may want to cross the Atlantic without using a GPS.

Yes. A nautical chart. I'm sure you've seen those before.
Blackboro Mar 7, 2020 @ 8:17am
The tactical view is very useful during regattas. I use it all the time, during regattas or long races too, when I have to pass a buoy, it allows me to know when I have to tack on it. Or simply during my travels. But another version is under consideration.

"Yes. A nautical chart. I'm sure you've seen those before." Mandela effect?
As for the tools on the map, a lot of people from Uboot want them too.

For the moment I'm using Qtvlm or Opencpn, just like in real life. Even if I don't do drift calculation. I m still learning

Sailaway's weather update seems to be delayed instead of QTLMV which is in "real time".
6 hours delayed ? So i'm always running to the wind but it never there when i need (to late...)
(sorry for my english)
