The most important factor for deciding which sail to use is actually the True Wind Angle.
For the 50', I usually get the best performance like so:
(TWA)
Jib (Genoa), 27* - 90*
No.4, 27* - 90*
Code 0, 90* - 120*
Gennaker, 120* - 180* (but speed declines markedly above 160*)
The only time I would be have a question about which headsail to use based on wind speed is if I am hauling upwind.
So far, I've only used the No.4 for True Wind Speed above 25 kt.
BUT above 18 kt TWS I also tend to a) furl the Jib/Genoa, or b) lower the Code0 or Gennaker halyard part way. For some reason, this helps keep up the boat speed.
Also, the most consistent way I found to keep up boat speed while heading up wind at wind speeds above 23 kt was to put up the No.4, put on a 100% Main Reef, and unfurl the jib very slightly to about 80% furl or so.
