Engine
For non racers an engine to steam through the calms would help. Fuel should not be unlimited so that realistic decisions about engine use could be made. This also opens the sim up to motorboats too. It's quite possible to race and voyage in the same seas as the sailing yachts.

Windy com!
Find your motor.
I am not particularly against the idea of seeing engines aboard cruise sailboats. But we are on a simulation of sailing with as the only engine the winds, the sails and our knowledge.

If the races taught me one thing, it is to read the weather and understand it. Know how to use it to the best. Take advantage of the experiences of other sailors. And learn, learn and still learn again.

And so I benefit better from my cruises alone.

I've seen a lot of videos of people traveling by sailboat. And I always found her sad to see some motor sailing, while they have no time constraint. And there is wind, upwind, but they have wind. And the worst of it is that one of these guys called the marina to be picked up in the middle of the ocean following a power failure over Puerto Rico. Why?

A motor? Why not, we have a propeller on the Rose.

As soon as there are realistic ports and marinas with wind, current, drift, water depth, tides etc it would be great to have engines for docking. Using the engine during trips is of course everyone's personal decision with the exception of timed challenges and races

I am just not interested in races. I spent too many days and nights on the rail some time back. Competition just doesn't do it for me any more. The navigational challenges of ocean passages fascinate me. That is where windy.com and fastseas.com are useful. When the sim can output all relevant NMEA sentences then we will be able to run a charting package alongside. This takes it from being a game to becoming a really useful simulator that can be used for a variety of purposes.

I'm currently moving a (real) sailboat from Carolina Beach, NC to New Bern, NC. I'm also simulating the move using Sailaway. I sure as heck would like a motor going up the ICW.

Whatever you do,...don't mention things like, Engines,..harbours,..decent coast lines, economy, survival, damage in this forum because all the so-called 'Virtual Racers' here will simply not have it. They will jump on you like a ton of bricks!! They think it's Their simulator and want to keep it as it is and frown on anybody that comes up with ideas they'd like to see. Ducks while leaving the room.

Sailaway is a simulator not a survival game that's it !
About the visual aspects of the game, i invite you to read this post : https://www.sailawaysimulator.com/2017/10/30/developer-blog-improving-sailaways-ocean-height-map-accuracy/

It's NOT a simulator. The title of this arcade game is simply called 'Sailaway' on the pretence of being a simulator and that's what will happen if the game remains stagnant in it's current form. It will sailaway into the distance with nobody but the few remaining die-hard racers onboard. It's you racers that will bring about the demise of the game.

Do not forget it is an EA game. Dev want the game to became a simulator. All you want to add is about a survival game (without the damage model). You want a survival game and I want a simulator game. This why we dont agree with.

We do need an engine as I am sure a lot of people dont use Sailaway only to race but also as a simulator of setting up a realistic journey. Even Virtual Sailor has it!!

So let us see the facts, if we add survival parts...nothing complex just simply stuff like food/water OPTIONAL and a OPTIONAL way to buy it on harbours you could start in the netherlands and made a classic trip by stars and compass to the NEW WORLD....in RL days and then you could even "lose" add more on the top of a simulation. NAH you are right sounds dumb just let us have 3 ropes and call ist simulator and thats enough if i can race 20 minute for the fun...very nice simulation. Then we dont need THE WORLD as a map...i still didnt bought it for this reason how lucky i would be i could let us say sail a old smaller boat and reenact like im in the 1800s and doing a FIRST of something with as much simulation for sailing as it could be. Like from Europe to America. Iam sure Simple Life Simulation would add a lot to it.
