I guess I am surprised there is no early level / beginning auto-gun that can used? I've been forced to use rifles, knifes, fists, or pistols while largely untrained.
I just ended up selling a whole lot of junk, items, weapons, etc to a caravan trader for one M-16 rifle. It costed over 4,000 but I can finally make use of my weapon skill investment. Wish I could say the same about Fidel who always runs into battle and gets himself killed almost immediately. (maybe my fault for speccing him as melee?)
Problem with weapon progression in this game is that like half of the weapons go instantly obsolete because weapons that are simply better become available on same time. Also AKM and AKS-47 are slower to use than rest of assault rifles. Pretty much only reason to use those aside from using those out of principle is if you are running out of 5.45x39mm or 9x39mm ammo.
Assault rifle progression is pretty much following:
Rusty AK
AKM
AKS-47
AKS-74U
M-16
HK33
9A91
Vintorez
Machineguns:
Rusty RPD
RPD
RPK-74
FN Minimi
PKM
When it comes to companions. Companion AI isn't the strong part of this game. Since you already specced Fidel to melee, you have probably seen some stupidity. Automatic weapons and companions don't mix well either, but to see absolutely colossal stupidity from AI you need to have companions specced to melee and automatic weapons. I can't recall how many times I have seen Fidel to kill my dog or Alexander with machine gun. AI will always use the most powerful attack they can. In case of machine guns the alternatives are short burst and long burst. They will shoot the nearest enemies with long burst when there are two friendlies right next to the nearest enemy. Only reason they might use single shots or short burst from automatic weapons is because enemy is out of range burst or longer burst or they don't have action points to use. Oh they will waste ammo on first round of encounters with low level rats and insects unless you can force them to use more reasonable weapon that doesn't use that much ammo. Even they they will randomly switch back to weapons that are utter overkill for situation and they might be running low on ammo. Vintorez in companions hands is especially funny as ammo is rare and expensive, mostly because its burst and single shot require same amount of action points.
I had explored the first bunker, roaring forest (where I had to set Fidel's AI to run away from enemies, then run in combat straight to the exit to make it out alive), etc, many other places. All and all over 10 locations. Zero assault rifles, let alone machine guns. I've never even seen one of those in a store.
But apparently when I bought the M-16 I immediately went from zero to mid-tier (A to D, skipping B and C) So I guess there is that.
Level 9. Just completed wiping out the raiders with the A-Team squad (because the strategist looks like Hannibal). They did all the work. I shot a few and Fidel ran for the hills or else he would die in 2-seconds. Should I ditch Fidel because he is soaking up XP but is next to worthless, or should I keep him around for story/dialog reasons?
Keep him around to carry your junk.
Best weapons for companions are rifles imo(because of what duracell wrote).
You get 1 chance later in the game to respec either yourself or 1 companion.
Apparently you can get a dog but I never came across it. I've had random encounters with solo friendly wastelanders that have a dog, but that is it.
Raising your survival later in the game, will trigger the dog encounter as it's not lvl dependant.
