Can't use ladders to escape battle?

I'm in the first village and found myself literally locked in mortal kombat with a seemingly immortal foul beast named "mouserinks" in the cellar of the abandoned hut. Is it possible at all to use the ladder to escape once battle commences? It's green when I place my pointer over it, but I can't seem to "use" it no matter how many AP I have.

If you can run away from wolves in the open wastelands by simply moving to a green tile, then it stands to reason that you should be able to use a ladder to get out of a cellar to avoid being eaten by a mouse.

I know that CRPGs have their limits, and for true "freedom" there is only PnP.... but this annoys me more than it perhaps should have.

Hello. You can use the ladder during the fight. To do this, you need to move the cursor over the stairs, hold down long the left mouse button and select use in the menu that appears.
