How is the story/sandbox balance?

Is it more of a streamlined story progression RPG or more of a make your own story sandbox type of RPG?

It's very similar in format to Fallout 2 in particular, where it's a hybrid between an open world and a linear story, albeit one that you can approach in many, many different ways. It has a definite beginning, middle and end but what you do and how you choose to do it matters a lot and gives you a wide range of options; if you've beaten the game already and thus have some degree of meta knowledge, you can actually bypass a huge amount of the content and head straight to endgame if you're powerful enough and know what you're doing.

In short, there is a story to be told here but how it ultimately plays out is up to you. This game offers pretty much the same amount of leeway that Fallout New Vegas does in that you can pretty much do whatever you want and you will not break the game or make it impossible to progress.
