(I often edit a bunch of boxes onto the porch of Katya's Tavern, just for early-game convenience. No in-game advantage, but it helps me be more organized.)

Not anymore. They'll take anything that you wouldn't normally find on the ground if you leave the area. Even from containers. I tested today. If you leave the area to the world map, only one container will persist. If you have stuff across multiple containers, all but one will disappear. Including stuff left on the ground.
