About ammo: AP and JHP
Influenced from games like Jagged Alliance and of course all Fallouts, I use JHP against unarmoured or lightly enemies (beasts, animals, "raiders") and AP against those who wear medium and heavy armour.

Further (in said games):
JHP against armour does almost nothing, while AP against unarmoured opponents does just normal dmg,

In my current game I use AP and that crafted percussion revolver. Beside the fact, that I can shoot like crazy (1 AP per shot) I see the enemies fall mostly after the second or third shot. Those critters like rats and small spiders are mostly dead after the first hit.

Now I ask, if AP in this game is simply the better ammo against anything, while JHP seems to be the "poor man's bullet".

Although the percussion revolver counts to the lower tiers, it seems to be superior to almost any weapon I've used so far - not only because of the high frequency of possible shots per turn.

Example:
Via console I gave myself - at level 2 - a HK MP 5 and used JHP. This is a mid-tier weapon and should be devastating to all these low level mobs. But that was not the case.
I tested it in fights against the first enemies (slavers at night in that fishing area) and had a hard time. I reloaded and used the revolver with AP. They were dead after the second turn while I was only "slightly wounded".

As it looks now, there is no rational reason to use anything else than this revolver with AP ammo.

So, are there any insights, how this game handles AP and JHP?

AP is just a superior but rare ammo, yes

What are you asking? The game is working as intended so if you use lower caliber guns you may find them more reliable but the burst from the AK or AC Val are devastating when used by someone with high skills.

Pistols are a good solution because the devs programmed the game a certain way and i hope they change that.

Other than that light machineguns do the most damage if their bullets hit, the sniper rifles can do a ton of critical damage and aimed shots, the assault rifles are very reliable and cost effective, the shotguns are good for non armored enemies

AP rounds are very usefull but there are some enemies who seem to be cheating on their armor stats so later on they are necesary.
It's also about your build and your skills, if you have high atention hiting stuff won't be a problem but with high skill, stats and some perks + drugs the other guns are just destroying enemies like doomguy is destroying demons

That crafted revolver+ is a bit too good for my taste - it should be 3 AP per shot (2 AP with a perk) to make it somewhat balanced.

Unless there is some hidden formula behind this, using non AP bullets on non armored enemies gives no advantage except that non AP bullets are more common to get and cheaper. AP bullets will always do more damage, no matter what.

So, as @ Neyreyan wrote "what are you asking", I have my answers:

In contrast to the classic Fallouts, Jagged Alliance etc. is AP-ammo in this game the better choice, no matter what armour the enemy has.

The percussion revolver is currently a bit OP, but together with AP-ammo the better choice, until the devs will eventually decide to nerf it.

Right?
