it's for an easter egg you need to choose a book instead of an reward for the barman quest...the rest is in the book ;)
the easter egg is in the stone circle in next to the village

I'd also like to know. I found it hilarious that the devs went to the trouble to write speech specific to using that gun. Too bad the villagers didn't find it as funny as I did when I went "bang bang bang" on them and horribly murdered me. No place for fun times in soviet wasteland it seems. =(

So I got the wooden rifle by hiding my items in the crates next to the burned house in the prologue and the ak turned into a wooden assault rifle. Is this intentional?

I sold the wooden AK to the town vendor, and it's still in his inventory.
So as soon as I see a use for it, I'll buy it back :-)

i picked the book, read it, expected found another book as it was incomplete, failed make any link. I can admit i have been bad, but that's quite weird links to do.

If it's an easter egg, what does it refer too?

Which quest is the barman quest? The Lord of the Rings one? I couldn't choose any book for a reward for it, just money and more money.

No, when you speak to bookseller, when you leave he offers you a quest to kill bandits attacking any caravan with books and burning any books.

Yes I thought it was about Dead City, or the man dream. Seems more some unfinished stuff. But I don't get the "trick" design of this game, I guessed/deciphered almost none.

If you go to the Circus, you can give 10 rubles to the bearded lady to tell your future. She'll give you a riddle about the rifle in which she says something about wooden toy, place of dead things and a woman who will pay for things that others normally won't. I haven't been to Dead City yet in this playthrough but I will. She is obviously pointing towards the woman who buys artifacts.

Fair enough, I haven't been to Dead City with the rifle yet. I always sold it assuming it was just a toy.
