Melee is not viable as a main combat skill....at least not for now, it depends on what the devs add
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyRDAPO0ZMk&t=2s
I finished the game and yes, Melee to total crap. I had to cheese the final battle with multiple time bombs that I never figured out how to use till that point.
Never got a car in the game. Spent the whole thing walking.
It was pretty fun and worth the money but I would never replay it. And yes, melee as your only combat skill is ♥♥♥♥ and a headache.
Only walking seems to have been a challenge run:)
Did you get the dog and the other 3 companions?
If you finished it means you liked it a lot:)
You could replay it again, with doing some quests in order and the right character build you could skip a lot of time but i guess you can wait for the devs to get more content since they promised
Also I heard you could make Red Fighter into a settlement. I recruited Hexagon and never visited again.
Melee isn't viable with super low dex/str but then I don't know why you'd bother.
[edit]: With 9 AP from 8 dex, bullrushing into combat I can get off a machete to the eyes and leningrad knife to the eyes, when standing still. I wield one in each slot to switch back and forth.
My experience was me catching a burst shot to the face and dying. If I got to go before my opponents I could kill one quickly. The rest I would have to funnel around corners or whatever.
The gun is infinitely more viable even without perks. My toon was low endurance so that probably had something to do with it. Fighting a stack of 5 to 10 guys with guns vs melee has not been viable in my experience .
Take melee for RP only or if you want a challenge. Impossible? Not at all.
The game will be much funner if you take a gun tho,
i think the melee has a problem because shields are not working proper and melee weapons don't have a tie in with throwing weapons.
For example, imagine blocking bullets and throwing tomahawks at the enemies before engaging them in melee and scalping them:)
I was using a quality knife for a good part of the game until i got the SKS, i shot a bullet, stab someone or stab and run a little back.
But with a str/end/dex build it would be crazy strong to use melee and some secondary weapons:) especially because you can get the vest, the death helmet, a good shield and some perks to practically be bullet proff.....but not critical bullet hit proff:)
