Although Wasteland 2 may have better writing (Atom devs are working on better translation from what i know), it's a mostly linear experience with theme parky design.
-If you don't like micromanagement, first off, Wasteland has A LOT of it. I mean A LOT.think baldur's gate, pillars of E , etc.
-Wasteland is really more tactical based, but it's a pamering game, you will have to play each battle like a chess game controlling every single of you (up to seven members if I recall) team
your build startegy concerns the whole squad, not necessarily just your character.
-Wasteland forces you into a ranger role. you're a ranger with expected conduct even tho lot of it is up to you. that means it's more linear, Atom is more flexible in line with fallout.
-wasteland has a goofier vibe and less subtle & realistic world. it's like, more cartoony for better or worse.
-the camera in wasteland is horrible (or so many say, including me, I agree, that's the worst top down camera I have yet to see ever) it feels extremely claustrophobic as there is conter-intuitive automated tilt to it. they made the camera even worse than what it already was in standard edition and never fixed it. Atom camera is pretty much faking iso/trimetric projection, the angles are better than in alpha and the camera has never been a real issue and got better even.
PLayed like 70% of wasteland back at release, it's good but I hated pampering a party and lost interest with the shear amount of micro management combined with a sh*t camera only to be restricted eventually in a linear pattern I was tired of. That and director's cut needed new game, I couldn't bother to restart, I eventually did, but they screwed the camera so much I had claustrophobic nausea 30 minutes in.
Honestly If you want the true oldschool fallout top down RPG experience, atom, even with the low ass prod value (that's a given with that budget) is just a way more solid contender than wasteland 2.
Low production value doesn't really show for me, I hated Wasteland 2's graphics - the character models especially. ATOM looks nicer in places I value highly, for example animations.
Considering I shrugged it off as "possibly never gonna happen" less than a year ago and am loving it now, the dev's rreally showed a lot of talent, spirit and dedication, in my opinion.
Wasteland 2 Director's Cut isn't that bad as some people speak about it. It's just not Fallout style but goes into it's own direction and still worth playing.
Atom is just like russian Fallout 1-2, so if you liked Fallout 1-2, you should definetly try it.
When it comes to player choice and meaningful outcomes, I'd have to say hands down Atom RPG. However, if you want a purely tactical experince (where the focus is all about combat) Wastland II probably wins by a hair.
Lastly, I think that Atom RPG just has more personality and humor than Wasteland II. Not to mention that the Atom RPG still looks really good, even on high resolution, and zoomed in.
edit: I also like how much this game adapts the NPCs actions to your characters stats/ gender. Thats very well done imo.
