The slots machine is very hard to win without it
It can be useful but it's mostly for fun, not gameplay
Get the money before the combats is something else than after. And the game seems have enough expense possibilities to exploit well to be rich from gambling.
EDIT: Frankly have the option to ignore most selling activities and replace it by gambling sessions looks like an interesting option. But the gambling limits seems too high to really allow it, not that I tested it, but from reading posts.
