I'd say V1 is worth playing through then shifting to V2 (and getting the DLC if you like it).
Vermintide 2: https://steamdb.info/app/552500/charts/
Player count of Vermintide 2 is way higher than Vermintide 1.
If starting with V2 you will have a harder time when later switching to V1.
V2 has more content and players.
V1 has better (and better locking) maps than V2.
2 is easier because some characters have safety nets, there's "out of jail" skills, temporary HP and other mechanics. It is true that ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan easier in 2, but you have waaaaaaaay more tools to deal with it than in 1.
1 has some maps that do not have full books or no books at all, so those maps are sadly not run that much due to that. Also the DLC weapons only drop in the DLC maps, so getting them is a bit frustrating. There's no quickplay to increase your loot chance.
2 has all maps with full books. However it has some bosses that increases your loot dice quantity.
1 has a more straightforward level up system and gear. However the end game grind is much higher because of the resources you need just to roll the properties you need in each weapon and then roll to increase the % of such item. Reds? They either drop or you get them with daily quests that appear, you do the missions of the dailies and you work towards the loot you chose and get it guaranteed. Reds, as well, are unique and have traits that cannot be obtained usually, two sets of them and you cannot change them; this also means that some reds are REALLY damn good better than the norm and other reds that are garbage. However, once you get a red of X item, it's out of the item pool and you cannot get it anymore.
2 has a slow (not so slow now) leveling system and a gear system that is, lets be honest, REALLY BAD until you reach end game where then it becomes better than Vt1. Reds are just "orange but max rolls". You cannot work towards an item you want with a guarantee unlike in 1 sadly, this mechanic is really missed - the same that when obtaining some reds it was an inmense joy because of obtaining a unique item with unique trait combinations and thus it could play differently.
1 has only skaven and one boss. This is the worst part, the skaven are fine, the single boss is not.
2 has three races to fight, skaven being the best ofcourse. Bosses? Quite a few plus the "lords" that are even better.
1 has better atmosphere than 2. No way around it. You want to see how the empire is trying its best to survive under a rat onslaught that came out of nowhere? You will see it here.
2 has different areas but it won't reach the same atmosphere.
1 has two game modes, survival (two maps, one of them DLC) and the campaign. The survival sucks.
2 has several game modes, weaves (Dlc) sucks. Now it also has Vs!
For example, VT1 Saltzpire one of the few endgame meta equipment was the falchion and repeater crossbow; VT2 falchion and xbow is ok, but outclassed by other weapon/class combinations, so much so that they are lackluster and unimpressive.
Lore wise, VT1 was much more deep and the story felt like it followed a path, each mission you felt like you were one step closer to defeating the great evil. VT2 really feels like you just get thrown around random locations and the missions feel loosely related to the storyline, i.e. you end up feeling like: why are we here again?
That is not to say VT2 is a bad game, it is in fact very fun. VT1 is great as well, but the game was already on life support a few years back and is pretty much dead.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, you reminded me of that absolute disaster ♥♥♥♥ of loot RNG.
Vermintide 1 = Plants vs Zombies
Vermintide 2 = Plants vs Zombies 2
ok so new question should I invest my time lvl up my characters in vt1 or just play the story mission and move to 2?
I advice against starting with Vermintide 1. Mostly because both titles are coop games at their core and the community of the predecessor is pretty much dead while Vermintide 2 is alive and well.
I think you'll be better off to start with Vermintide 2 and and perhaps check out the roots later if you get hooked by the game. Vermintide 1 is a good game in its own right, but it's not a good entry point into Tide games anymore.
