And you need to do a lot of work for Darktide to make it better than just adding some content to V2 and then release a pack of skins alongside it.
V2 is just seen in a better light, which means people are more likely to spend some money on cosmetics on it.
DT is seen as a mess, people rather not want to spend money on that until (insert reason here). It has improved, but the damage it has done will stick for some time.
Then again, both games have their own team
Edit: and V2 got a whole 6 patches last year (two of which were major ones, one with the reworks of two classes, the other an extension to a gamemode and rebalancing).
to businesses if something is going to cost them more than make they will seek out something else &/or do as little as possible to make it float for as long as possible before it finally tanks
1. Release the game and see reception.
2. If good do some fast and dirty dlc for mad money.
3. Start the next game and put the current cash cow on life support.
4. Take a whole year to release a few patches for current game with some fire sales.
5. Release next game. Rinse and repeat.
The fact they came back to V2 and started adding more stuff really tells how bad the new game is doing. That it's not worth the massive patches and work. Knowing no one wants to buy stuff let alone be able to develop dlc while the core game is gutted and needs so much work. They know the initial sales have basically already bottomed out and their dlc cow farm ability for it is a long way off. To get any cash flow they have to release stuff in a game that has population and polish that you can throw maps and outfits for quick cash and player retention.
...how many games do you think Fatshark has released exactly?
Vermintide 1: 2015 (3 year)
Vermintide 2: 2018 (5 year+)
Darktide: 2022
And even if we look at earlier games:
War of Roses: 2012 (2 year)
War of Viking: 2014 (Server support ended in 2017, at the same time as WoR)
Krater: 2012 (3 years)
Bloodsport Tv: 2015
I wasn't around for WOM, what happened? I thought V2 was smooth sailing and always popular.
Sound like FS aligned with a (red headed) streamer who took the game in a completely different direction than the community wanted then when the mess was released he abandoned the game and went into hiding not to be seen again until Darktide release.
The mess sounds very similiar in many ways to the Darktide debacle where the community has largely been ignored until the game was on life support and about to die. So maybe they can resurrect Darktide like they did V2.
When WoM came out it became very impopular due to the Weave being mostly a dead mode that doesn't work like it's supposed to, and the Beastmen which a lot hate because they have more difficult break points.
But all cried about strong AF (and unfairly strong!) beastmen
Vermintide 2 had so much content on release, because it used so many assets from Vermintide 1. All the weapons were the same models, enemies are the same models, etc. Darktide doesn't have that advantage.
