How to use rapier pistol with xbox controller?

I've searched and can't seem to find the answer. Clicking right thumb stick inspects my weapon, but doesn't fire the pistol.

Edit:upon further experimentation, it looks like I can fire the pistol if I depress the right thumb stick immediately after swinging the sword, before the animation has completed. When I play with mouse and keyboard I just press the extra mouse button, no swing required. Is this working as intended?
