Having a buffer character lets you have some wiggle room.
I guess that's a good point. I still wish co-op games could get over this arbitrary 4 player limit, I have more friends that that.
I wish I had four friends.
I won't be your friend though. I already have too many for Vermintide 2.
Such a pipe dream though, I'd have to develop it all myself.
Also we want more characters then we have slots so we actually get a variety of team compositions occasionally.
So we dont see the exact same maps over and over AND see and hear the same voice and faces over and over.
With that logic, any number is arbitrary. Why stop at 5? Why not have a 6 player limit? Why not 10 and allow mirriors?
4 is just a nice number devs have settled on when considering the ease and speed of match making getting people together, the power of the PC required fo the amount of action the players will create, and the scale and ability of the players to create interesting gameplay. Without feeling bloated.
Remember, the more people you add to the game, the less impact each player feels they have on the outcome. Since you are then required to buff all the enemies to make sure the raw DPS of that many players doesn't faceroll the PvE content when focusing and working together. Players then "alone" the enemies will feel very tanky.
So weighing all the considerations verses "the gamer with 4 other really good friends", the choice is obvious.
4 max number of controllers allowed connected to a video game console almost always minus very old ones with special hardware.
This game might not make use of 4 player split screen but its still working with in paradigm set many years ago.
I think it's also the fact it was easier to split-screen into 4 different screens than 5
