I like unchained, because she has a boat load of health and high stamina. I'm a legend player, so this advice works on top tier stuff.
Pyro is her ranged career but I don’t use it. She gains higher crit chance with high overcharge and a passive ranged damage bonus, combine this with other talents and she can melt any enemy before they get anywhere near your team without building up barely any overcharge, she can quite literally fire forever with the right build
Unchained is her melee career and my personal favourite. She has more HP (150) and takes 50% less damage from everything (technically giving her effectively 300HP) making her extremely tanky (get a Foot Knight for +15% damage reduction plus Volcanic Body for +20% HP and a HP necklace and you’re almost unkillable). She benefits from having high Overcharge to make her melee more powerful by increasing damage/stagger/cleave. Just be careful not to blow up as getting hit also builds up your overcharge meter, this is where your Ult comes in to reset it instantly while burning everything around you. Spam your staff to wave clear then finish everything off with your buffed up melee. My go to build is 2/1/3/2/3
In terms of melee weapons, everyone says Mace as it can kill armoured targets easier with it’s heavy, 2nd and 3rd heavies have nice CC, although the weapon is a bit slow and is mostly single target damage, making dealing with hordes while you’re surrounded a bit of a problem. Dagger is another great weapon for spam attacks and decent CC with heavy and added DoT plus a powerful headshot 2nd heavy attack that can kill elites, probably my favourite melee right now. Fire Sword is useful for CC and has a good amount of cleave with decent attack speed
As for ranged it’s now become a matter of opinion and what you feel comfortable with. Pre-nerf Beam staff was king for its stagger, long range, snipe/shotgun attack. Conflagration staff has quickly become my favourite after it’s buffs and is extremely useful for CC and can actually kill stuff now with it’s charged attack. This can give you a load of temp HP right before a horde reaches your team, any that do survive get staggered and eventually die to DoT. Bolt staff is another popular choice, but I rarely use it. Fireball is close to Conflag but it’s charged is a bit harder to aim and much less CC but with more damage. I hate using Flamestorm, terrible range and doesn’t seem to kill anything, might only be useful for staggering hordes
You are the Damagedealing Wave clear (normale staff attack) special/boss killer (rightklick attack Boltstaff, Headshot ofc or Mace heavy) who is at the same a great dmg soak.
Carry Tomes and Grims and just don´t care!
With that said. Contrary to what many think, BW is actually decent in legend with fireball/conflag staff. You can't carry games through boss encounters, but you can still destroy hordes/juggle patrols while having an ability that lets you kite enemies back or even to move forward to save a run.
I have no real experience using unchained, but I have seen quite a few people carry runs with them on legend while using a fireball staff. Seems to shine in "oh crap" moments like a patrol being pulled or being the last one standing in a last stand kind of event (end of righteous stand kind of moments) and actually being able to handle it alone.
But yea, if we had to break it down to what is the most powerful/effective and what has the most carry potential, then it is hands down pyro. Also as for your melee question; it depends on the circumstances. If your team has extreme waveclear, then don't take a sword. If your team lacks waveclear, then consider taking one. If your team needs elite killing, then take dagger or mace.
Personally despite what everyone always says, I think unchained is the strongest. Yes pyro does more damage, but you're most useful to the team if you never go down. Unless you are a lot better at surviving than your teammates, I think not going down and dealing good damage has more value than dealing very good damage. On a 4 person team without bots, it doesn't matter what classes you chose, you have enough damage to not get overwhelmed so long as someone die instantly and leave you a man or 2 down. Hell even just tanking the aggro gives your teammates enough room to survive and kill stuff.
So don't listen to all the pyro is best people. Try them both and see for yourself, it depends largely on playstyle.
