My friend and I can't play in a private game because we use unsanctioned mods?? Help plz.

Hi. My friend and I are trying to play a PRIVATE game with some unsanctioned mods running. We both get anti-cheat failures when trying to connect. What are we doing wrong? Isn't private game and sanctioned mods irrelevant?

Play in the modded realm when launching the game

Unsanctioned mods cannot be used in official realms. You must play in modded realms if you want unsanctioned mods in your load order.

If you want to play official, sanctioned mods only are allowed. The game being private has nothing to do with whether the mods are usable or not in their respective realms.

When you open the launcher, before hitting play, you get an option between "official" realm and "modded" realm. Pick modded realm, like Spoopy and Kluxx said, and you can play with your friend (and with everyone else in the modded realm!) (Or not if you set it to private!)
