When to open chests?
My friend says I'm supposed to be at or above 200 equipment power before I open commendation chests. I'm now at 201 equipment power, and lvl 16.

Is there any reason for this 200+ equipment power thingy my friend told me? he's offline right now so I can't ask him.

There isnt a trick or magic to anything about getting rares or legendaries. Dont believe this BS hype. Ask fatshark and get the answers instead of the community in steam.

1. do not (or rather think about it before) open other than recruit difficulty chests before you have Lvl. 100 items. Use recruit chests to reach this level as they are capped to it.
Eventually use low-level chests of other types to move your things up.
2. Then it is wise to open other types to move up in Item power.

It is also wise to avoid opening valuable chests (Emperor-champion, higher-type legend vaults) by character below lvl. 30. There is clear relation between character's level and items quality.
When I open commendation chests by Lvl. 30 hero, I usually get blue and better stuff.
Once I did so with Lvl. 20 hero, I was obtaining mostly basic and sometimes green stuff.

When it comes to red items, no-one knows. It may be by chance but as well it may be set by some limited stocks set by Fatshark.

Not gonna lie, first time i read generals in champ can drop reds.
5s with google, if its true or not:

Datamined by Reddit user.
Champ General’s: 1.5%
Champ Emperor’s: 4.8%
Legend Peasant’s: 3.4%
Legend Commoner’s: 4.3%
Legend Merchant’s: 7.7%
Legend Soldier’s: 9.1%
Legend General’s: 10.1%
Legend Emperor’s: 16.7%

Hedge denies that the rates are correct, but enough talk is about general champ boxes.

I will confirm: I've gotten reds from commendation and champion generals. I wouldn't hold my breath for one though. Well under 1%.

from my personal data:

Commendation: 0.7%
Champ General: 0.5%
Champ Emperor: 5.5%
Legend Peasant: divide by zero error
Legend Common: 15%
Legend Merchant: 10.2%
Legend Soldier: 21%
Legend General: 13.9%
Legend Emperor: 15.4%

Clearly I got lucky in a couple catagories
I think it depends. You'll slow down your progression at first. You could wait until you hit 300 Power on each slot for a better chance at Power 300 reds, but the chance of a red is still so low that you'll probably only get 1 or 2 even if you save up all your commendation chests.

If you are okay with slow progression, do Recruit Missions and only open Recruit chests until you hit 100 Power Level on all slots (Slots Power are not character specific) and level 15 on each character.

Once you hit 15 on each character and 100 in each slot, you should have about 250 power. Start hitting Veteran missions until you hit level 25+ and 300 in each slot, opening only Veteran chests.

Once you hit 30 and 300 for your favorite character, spam open all commendation chests (and emperor's chests if you run out) until you get a red for your favorite. You can then level up the others to 30.

At this point, you'll probably have 1 red for your favorite character. It'll give you a slight bonus for Champion mode, and you'll (probably) have enough experience to at least do decently in Champion mode as long as you've been learning the entire time.

Of course, in all honesty, it doesn't really matter unless you can't play Champion/Legend mode for whatever reason.

Open them asap, they contain crap 99% of the time anyway.

If you're below 300 power rating on your individual items mate just open as you get them because that number only rises by opening chests and gradually increasing it if I remember. So saving them before you hit max power is just gimping yourself.

It doesn't sound like the best strategie to me. Its a slow approach, but maybe works for some.
By getting to 15 with all chars you likely could have hit at least p150 on items (depends on how often you lose, maybe even 200+).

Second part is, you almost guaranteed won't have a red from commondation chests alone before you enter champion, even if you play all chars on 30+15.
You'll likely know your characters a bit better, but yet have to encounter FF or the higher difficulty from champ (might going to kill you if you check at the wrong time what hit you in the rear).
Also as you stood long in recruit, you'll likely be on a lower powerlevel than if you would have moved on to veteran quicker (after you hit heropower 150-175 it should be easy enough).

If you are insecure about joining champion, best wait until you hit lvl 20 just for temp hp
