When to open chests?
My friend says I'm supposed to be at or above 200 equipment power before I open commendation chests. I'm now at 201 equipment power, and lvl 16.

Is there any reason for this 200+ equipment power thingy my friend told me? he's offline right now so I can't ask him.

Afaik the only reason to not open a commondation is you want a cosmetic for another char.
Other thing said often is for veteran items (drop from 2 highest of champ and all leg boxes) are said to only drop above lvl 25.

So I should just continue to level and open them when im at or above 25?

That 200 power thingy is an outdated trick, and it was kind of ill-advised thing to do back in the day too.

Commendation chests have a very small chance of containing red items. A min-maxer might suggest saving your commendation boxes till high-levels, so that you can be certain to have the best chance of getting red items.

However by doing so you are slowing down your power progression. If you open all chests as you get them, you are always fighting with the best possible gear, and the runs are easier to complete. Plus worrying about chests takes away from your enjoyment.

Always open chests. Especially com chests.
Only chest worth thinking to save are general or emperor chests (champion) or any legend vault.
Those can contain red items. And only save them till youve got a character at lvl 25/30. Anything else just open right away to get your item power higher faster.
Saving com chests for reds is a theoretical thing. Its not worth. I got 3-4 reds out of those in 1.2k hours. Dont bother with red droprate in com chests. Just open them.

Open all your chests as you get them, with the exception of Legend difficulty chests (all of them) and Champion difficulty (Emperor only).
Keep those until you reach lvl30.

With this, you'll keep a good progression with item level, and keep a few good chests in hope to obtain Veteran (red) items.

As you wish. The dropchance on any box below the 2 highest of legend is anyway laughable.
It did long ago matter as you only could get past p200 items in champion and legend.

So if you have champion generals and emperors boxes and badly want a veteran item (red) you can gamble with it. (Powerprogress for the possibility of a red after lvl 25).

Dropchance on them is <5%.
Commondationn could drop too, but around 0.5%.
Highest box from legend (emperor vaults) are around 15%.

By not opening boxes you will slow down your powerprogress as (itemwise) it only increases by opening boxes and getting higher items.
Reds are always p300 with max stats and don't affect the itempowerlevel from boxes.

Okay thank you all. Should I open 2-4 chests, equip the best ones and then continue the cycle in one go? I feel like lvl 16 is too low.

Opening them is your fastest way to reach gear power of 300, don't save them.
You want to get to 300 fast so your any chests with a chance to drop red items can actually drop red items.

It doesn't matter. Once you got the item with higher power you can salvage them and they still count for the power of box drops.

I was pretty sure generals could, with around 1%. I would have to dig but don't care enough about.

The only reason to save up com chests is for a chance at receiving a hat, if it's your 1st toon you want to reach max hero power asap, which can be increased by crafting trinkets.

As soon as you get them. Gotta pump that item power levl up to 300 as soon as possible.
