You are way more likely to fail and get nothing. That was my experience.
This is how the game is for most pubs. You gotta learn to carry or play classes that are able to carry.
On the other hand, Books get way more important on champion and legend, because you can get red items. So it is quite useful to know where all the books are and how to play when you have all the books. Full book runs are a given in every legend pug game and you should know how to handle it when playing champion and legend.
Basically you don't deserve to win if you can't carry books & grims. It is a team game so the 'you' is the team.
Once you hit a certain point in the game, even on Legend, books become meaningless. You take the occasional grim fo your Shade gets her 15% power boost or Pyro can auto-vent faster, but if you have like 100 emp-vaults sitting there unopened because there's no point in opening them... well, why bother with books?
Tell you the truth, it is actually VERY liberating if you don't go for books anymore, especially with grims. Not only can you finally use potions as "tanky" carreers, you can also ditch the curse resistance freely on any hero and experiment with builds. Since trinket is pretty much set for crits and curse resist, having at least one free ability slot gives you surprising new ways to discover certain carreers and builds.

Either bugged or you rememberd it wrong. Reds only drop in commendation chests, champion general and emperor chests and all legend chests.
That may be true for people with +600 hours, but people who dont have 100 legend vaults sitting around and everyone red equipped certainly want to get to that point eventually and that works best with full book runs. Pre-teams certainly have more options but Pug games should never be told to ditch the books, that just unfair.
