High Hard Drive usage
For some reason my hard drive will often stay pegged at 100% usage while running the game sometimes. This can change depending on where I am in the level and causes low res textures for enemies also. This doesn't always happen, sometimes the game runs just fine and other times it does this. Anyone got ideas on what could be causing it?

Possibly your HD has low bandwidth, and it gets capped out when the game loads assets. Possibly your RAM is low, and Windows is using your HD as a cache to mimic ram. Laptops with integrated video cards in particular are known to do this.

In both cases, the only real fix is to get a better rig. You can try turning textures down as low as they go, that's what takes the most bandwidth. You can also try freeing up space on your HD and defrag it to make it run faster.

What is your system? If you don't have enough RAM the system will use the swap file on your HDD and that is why you might get 100% usage, unloaded textures, missing sounds and so on.

Post patch problem, need fix.
Yep paging maybe. How much ram and how many apps are running in the background? That and you have a cheaper drive? Some cheap drives do not handle multiple access very well.

I've got 16gb of DDR4 ram, a GTX 1070 and i7700 and windows 10 pro which is stored on a separate SSD. It's something with VT2 specifically, it doesn't happen with any other game. And even then it only happens sometimes.

16gb ddr4 ram so I doubt that's the problem, paging file is set to system managed/auto for both SSD and hard drive

So what is the game on? A second SSD or a HDD as you said in your first post?

Remember to disable your Antivirus while playing. Some AVs kill the performance of some games.

For example I never disabled my Bitdefender for anything because it's famous for its small impact on system performance, but when I started playing Battlefront 2 it caused huge menu freezing.
Then I noticed it was also responsible for little performance hiccups in Vermintide 2.

the game is on a 2TB hard drive, my OS is on 120gb SSD

Yeah well why would we care what your OS is on when you are complaining about the game?
Defrag your HDD and check it for errors, there are free tools for that.

I might be completely wrong, but in the age of SSD I personally don't expect demanding games to run well on HDDs anymore.

Defragged, no errors.

Then my next guess would be virus/malware.

A virus specifically designed to cause high hard drive usage with 1 specific video game. Yes this sounds plausible

Sorry for making an educated guess.
Enjoy your game.
Whitelist VT2 in AV just for a test. How do you know the game is running the HD 100% what utility are you using or are you just monitoring task manager? Are you running dx12?
