Hammer and shield or axe and shield?

Playing the dwarf iron-blah. Which is better?

I've enjoyed how I can ust clobber hordes, but at the same time it frustrates me when I am whacking at bosses and their health doesn't seem to notice. The description of the axe says it is higher damage, but I'm wondering if that damage boost is noticable when compared to the hammer's apparent crowd control use.

Axe and shield is a solid multipurpose weapon. AP axe can take care of armored singles, and the shield bash and push will allow you to effectively CC crowds while the rest of your team burns them down. Granted, the axe and shield was probably a bit better in VT1 since you could spam the shield bash attack, but in VT2 you at least get way more mileage out of its AP light attack, since SVs and Chaos Warriors are pretty much everywhere.

Hammer and shield, on the other hand, is awful. The damage on both the heavy and light attacks is incredibly poor, and it can't handle crowds anywhere near as well as it should. Every time I get one of these I salvage it immediately. It just doesn't feel good to use.

Worth noting, as Ironbreaker you can still tank pretty damn effectively with a two-hander. I'm using a 2H hammer right now and it works pretty damn well with the right item mods and talents.

Honestly, axe and shield is a bit op but please ♥♥♥♥ don't nerf it. By op I mean it's really the only weapon set for Bardin (in melee) that isn't Slayer-only and doesn't suck balls. 2h hammer is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ but by god hammer and shield is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapon of any class in the game. 2h axe is nice, but I feel that 1h axe outdoes it still. And then you just add free stamina bars to that axe with a shield.. how can you not love it? But yeah, it's op compared to the other choices because the other choices are mostly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.. I feel that the hammer and shield combo is the worst offender, and should just maybe be completely taken out, as you never need THAT much tanking and if you do (champ/legendary) even that won't help you, you'll just be stuck with like 30 kills a match (not that kills necessarily matter whatsoever, but yeah). I mean sure, these weapons are great if you want to just knock down people for your team, but the axe-shield combo does that plenty well, while having way more killing power.

Arguably I would say axe shield is better for higher difficulties as you can deal with armored enemies easier. While hammer and shield is good cc honestly you can just use the flamethrower and stunlock entire hordes.

I prefer the Axe + Shield Combo. I like mowing down Storm Vermin with no problem, not to mention that stupid Warlord Skarnnik.
