if you were to go unchained you will need to pick between the mace or basic sword imo, basic sword if you wanna be able to handle hordes really well mace if you wanna handle armor really well.
you have a few choices of staffs *i use beam mostly* fireball and bolt and you would want to have both range/melee be reduce ability on crit and get as much crit as possible
also make sure 100% THAT YOU GET CURSE RES ON YOUR TRINKET its the most important stat in the game to have and seeing that you dont pains me.
from what you have said you arnt really good at avoiding dmg. playing the unchained will force you to get good at avoiding dmg at least it did for me as it was also my first to be leveled up and this was when you couldnt stop the explosion from using your ability.
you can also use the crit reduce ability cd on range/melee and just hold the beam into boss/hordes and spam the hell out of your ability. you can get a ability like every 10 seconds doing it that way or just stay heat sink both are fine
Pyromancer is great for taking out elites and specials but is weak in melee and is super squishy.
Unchained is great at crowd control but is a bit lacking in elite an special clearing. However, she's super tanky
Just depends on your preferred playstyle. I personally recommend unchained for pubs. You can clutch through hordes, chaos warriors, and elites all at the same time.
Okay. First, take a thought that to undestand game better and play better, you should know all cahracters, roles and weapons. So go try everything.
Forget about crit power, it has worse effect than +armor type now.
Stack damage vs enemies to get particular breakponts, to kill on one shot or with given combo.

(make copy on ownd disk to make it work)
Get Trinket with 30-33% curse resistance. It is a must.
Get resourceful sharpshooter on beam. It is most broken build for pyro.
For Unchained best builds include thermal equalizer
All ranged oriented careers are very surviable. Especially pyro, becuse for her every mob around is a sack of white hp.
I'd say it is in your skills.
Unchained has (allegedly, didn't do the math myself) the largest effective health pool in the game, but her overheat mechanic means you have to balance ranged offence, venting overheat and blocking melee hits to not suddenly explode for taking some random chip damage.
So to answer to your question, player skill usually amounts to more than career passive defence. Learn to defend effectively and to be conservative in your attacks (if you can hit them but that means they'll hit you, just block or dodge instead. They are an endless tide, you are that one green little health bar).
Unchained has 175 health (the highest amount with no health buffs, which you should certainly get from necklace) and she takes 50% less damage from all attacks. HOWEVER, this is balanced by the fact that her damage negated is transfered to overcharge, making her the most complex tank character who essentially has 2 life bars, one of which can lead to absolute tragic deaths if you're not careful.
My last time playing Unchained: I was high on overheat. I walked into a small pack of ambience rats HOLDING block the whole time, I wanted to block a couple hits to reduce overheat that way. Someone, as it's customary, went "hurr durr me see rats, me shoot", I got hit in the back, FF triggered the explosion (it was before you could use F while exploding).
I never played Unchained again :)
Edit: Elf eater dude is a bit blunt but he has a point, your items are bad. Your talent choice could play a role too.
Still, at least imo, skill > crappy items. If you attempt Legend and die early in the level it's most likely due to lack of skill, not lack of curse resistance - I bet he usually dies before even reaching a grim.
Go back to Champion and focus on completing the map while never getting hit, or grabbed. Pyro, unchained, gummy bear, play what you want, just don't take damage. Once you are confident try Legend again.
I don't remember whether I was very low or still on full green, either way I didn't want to take vent damage. I learned a lesson, but there's another one about shooting without looking hidden in my tale :)
Man never learn.
Where meelee as absolutley good is destroying CW and clearing small packs. And of course, every team need some meelee option to escape sticky situations, when ambush spawns right under your feet.
Mace, FB, conflag, bolt. Except of FB all gear is good for pyro.
