You can push to interrupt enemies. Its most important on legendary if the rats stack up so much, you can't stagger them all or block all at once. You also need it if you want to move through a horde (to pick up a downed teammember for example).

You also need only half as many pushes as attacks to get through a shield enemy's defense.

It depends on what enemy it is and what they are doing. Some aren't affected during certain attacks but can be stunlocked at other times. It interrupts their attack, and it literally pushes small ones out of the way. Many weapons also have a special followup move if you keep holding the attack button, called a push-attack. On some weapons (such as halberd) it's one of their most important moves.

Too clarify, two pushes (on legend at least) will always break a shield vermin's guard. Push, push, then beat him like a red headed step child in a black family at christmas (no I don't know what that means either, my old chef used to say it)

you can also hold block, then while still holding block to a counter hit, which is basically a heavy hit, this can one hit stormvermin in one or 2 hits and the i think chaos warrior the big bulky armor baddass dude takes several hits, if stunned, you can hit him with a few less hits, as long as you are aiming at the head

Enemies get stagger resistance when they are attacking, different attacks give them different amounts of stagger resistance.

The problem with opportunist is that you also need to have extra power vs an enemy for it to make a difference. eg. Pushing with the elf's dual swords will not stagger Storm Vermin that are doing a running attack, however they will if you have both Opportunist and +20% power vs Storm vermin.
