I had been trying to play SR3 on direct x 10/11 but as soon as I clicked that option, it would just close the game. It ran under directx 9 but not the others at all. I navigated to the Saints Row 3 folder to investigate saintsrowthethird_dx11.exe as some have mentioned. To my surprise my file was like this: saintsrowthethird_dx11.temp so I mereley changed it to saintsrowthethird_dx11.exe and double clicked it and it worked in directx 10/11 via steam from then on!

I have Vista SP2 I believe and stumbled over that there is an update needed for Vista to run direct X 11 and did a search and it took me to that link. Downloaded the update, restarted PC and loaded up the game in Direct X 10/11 no problem. This should only work for vista users (assuming that something else isn't causing the issue) but it is at least another solution.

not helpful at all - what did you do to run SR3 without any issues (this is a pretty old thread)

Hey i had this problem as well. i think that it might be either a shortcut issue in the application or it might be just windows but i know that when i browse the files of saints row there is a application name SaintsRowTheThird_DX11 and i assumed that it was direct x 11 and i started it and noticed a major difference in lag so that was my solution

You'll either need to re-install Windows Media Player, or go to the following link if you're running a N- Version of Windows-

Problem: SR3 works in DX9, but in DX10/11, the launcher quits and nothing happens.
Soluition: Install Windows Media Feature Pack

Reason: Windows 7N (the international version of Windows that is available in the EU) lacks specific features because of a lawsuit that MS lost. You have to manually install certain features, and they are not part of Windows Update until you do the initial install. This also applies to Windows 7KN

Confirmed Fix (Worked for me): You can download the media feature pack at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546 and then run windows update to make sure its all up to speed.

Interesting... I had been running SR3 perfectly fine, then it stopped working after I re-installed windows. Sure enough DX9 works, but 10/11 doesn't. I have been wracking my brain to figure it out, wondering what the hell I broke or missed on my re-install. Saw this... And remembered I download windows from MSDN... SO i have Windows 7N.

For those that aren't aware, Windows 7N is the international version, because of a lawsuit in the European Union that MS lost. It does not come with the Media Pack that the US version comes with. This includes Media Center, Media Player, and most importantly, some basic files required to make some type of playback calls via Direct X.

The lawsuit against MS was one AFTER XP came out, but before Windows 7. so this issues applies to Windows 7, not windows XP, which is why DirectX 11 does not work, but DirectX 9 does.

For a direct link to the media pack you can use http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16546 (I don't know about the link the other person used, but the one I used, works perfectly.)

Says the update is not applicable for my system.
Which is by the way light-years ahead of any requirements (i3750K, GTX680, 8Gb RAM, etc), so that shouldn't be a problem. It looks like the game may have troubles with Win7 x64... any other known solutions? I mean, damn. It's 2013, and I can't start a game I actually bought?..
