Coop works well enough in my experience, only notable exception/peeve in coop over singleplayer is that it won't check if you're the actual owner of any tank you jump into and thus it always results in full 5 police/military alert. (Especially true for the one that aint host.)
Edit addition: The unique saints crusader is special in that it doesn't cause alert states like other tanks do, so in coop that unique one is the only useable tank by player 2 unless you actually want full-blown war with the military.
(Most likely because while the design is based on regular crusaders, it's an unique one that never occur normally in the gameworld.)
Do note I'm talking about playing only with dlc's and not mods/cheats.
It's possible one or more of those screw with things, since netcode don't cover tank ownership there's probably alot more holes in it that could prove problematic while using mods/cheats.
Edit addition: We've run two copies in coop together on two laptops side by side seeing the responses and such between, played through most contents that way, and one of us connected by landline the other through cellphone so it's a proper internetcoop and not local-lan. (So I'd say it's defo playable, if you ignore the issue with tanks.)
Last edit addition: If you somehow still run into issues, some might be mitigated by the steam settings "In-Game" section, enabling steam networking to share your IP address with those you play together with.. (Because the game netcode really don't like slower latencies and without sharing you WILL have worse latencies.)
NEW EDIT ADDITION: Forgot to mention that there is an old bug with "Guardian Angel" mainstory mission, that crashes player2 to desktop.
You can avoid it for sure by player2 not upgrading weapons used in it,rocket+sniper that is.
Summary:
1: Player2 shouldn't upgrade sniper+rocket before they've completed "Guardian Angel" in coop. (the surefire way to avoid crash-to-desktop.)
2: Player2 shouldn't use any other tank than the pimped "Saints Crusader" even if he own others unless you want a somewhat buggy fullblown war with the military.
3: Try minimize latency issues through steam IP-sharing, since they can cause some seriously weird bugs at times if latency is too lousy.
