freezes computer?!
came back to play this again in 2021, having a blast and ignoring the many glitches but then the most offensive of all- it freezes my laptop to which not even a ctrl alt delete can close it. Did two hard resets, and it was STILL locking up my computer. I dont have a potato, i have a decent gaming laptop that runs vr and AAA games flawlessly. So i'm about 99% sure it's just that they ported it poorly. Am i crazy to think since they just did a remastered version that MAYBE they can fix the issues like this? prolly...

Said by another Steam user called Quantum, the freezing happens because the Saints Row "My Steelport" server went offline and the game is still trying to contact the server, and that can cause it to lock up. The simple solution is to take Steam offline, but that doesn't let you play online co-op.

If it really bugs you, a better solution is to add the following line to your Windows hosts file:

127.0.0.1 sr3.hydra.agoragames.com
Your Windows hosts file is located at "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts".
This causes the game to try to contact your own computer instead of the missing server, which fails very quickly and prevents the game from freezing.

If you still want the "My Steelport" functionality on your own computer, you can install the "My Steelport" emulator here:
https://www.saintsrowmods.com/forum/threads/my-steelport-emulator.17361/

The solution I described above works for both Saints Row 3 and Saints Row 4.

If that turns out to not be the case and the above STILL doesn't help, then it's likely your computer. Here's some technical info I found from sYnaPs that might help you.

Stuttering / Freezing:
The game is known to stutter/freeze randomly on systems that meet the recommended requirements. The effect of the stutter can be limited or stopped by disabling VSync.

Lag / Freeze in fullscreen with DirectX 10/11:
Disable your secondary monitor

Fail to Launch / Hangs / Freezes After Intro or Advertisement:
1. Set the compatibility mode to the game to “Windows XP”
2. Run the game directly instead of using the generated shortcut
3. Check your game cache / revalidate it to ensure you have okay files
4. Run the game in DirectX 9 mode
5. If you use multiple monitors, then disable one of them
6. Exit any program that could mess with the game
7. If you have Steam installed on an External Hard Drive try moving steam ( https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7710-TDLC-0426 ) to an internal Hard Drive or to another Hard drive in general.
8. If you have Saints Row installed on a hard drive other then C: try moving Saints Row to a new Steam Library on C: you can create a second steam library by launching steam with a -dev flag, clicking the new console tab, and following these directions ( http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/09/11/finally-an-in-built-way-to-choose-steam-install-locations/ ) then exit steam, copy the folder, then relaunch and reinstall saints row to the new C: library you just copied it to.
Download cracked .exes (the game fix) from gamecopyworld (I own this game from steam so I'm assuming it was a glitch with the steam .exes)

Game Crashes on Loading Screen After Starting a New Game:
1. Start game in DirectX 9 mode and start a new game. After that you can play DirectX10/11 version.
2. Try verifying the integrity of the game cache (right-click the game in the Steam library, select "Properties" then select the "Local Files" tab and click "Verify..."). Note that for many users Steam will always report that 1 file failed to validate and has to be replaced, even when you verify the game cache multiple times. Since this also happens to users who have no problems at all with the game, it is assumed to be something that is not affecting the game's performance.
3. If you are running the game on a Mac, with Boot Camp, and using an HFS+ formatted drive, together with additional software (such as MacDrive) you will need to install it on a native NTFS drive. This also applies to all other THQ recent titles.

Seemingly Random Crashes in DirectX 11 Mode:

1. One possible cause for crashes in DirectX 11 mode can be that the core voltage of the video card is set a little bit too low. In that case raising the core voltage by a very small amount can resolve the issue. Just Be carful when Changing your Voltage though!

what an informative and awesome response. much respect. I'm gonna throw you some points even if it doesn't fix my issue this is solid advice.

Man it saddens me that they straight up took all their servers offline. I always loved the SR games (with the exception of the new reboot trash upcoming) and I honestly prefer them to any of the new GTA games. I already had the sr games, and SR4 on xbone, but I grabbed it and sr3 on sale thru steam so I could play online with people. Takes me 2 hrs just to customize a character lol. Guess the joke's on me...

I like over the top games. I like super powers. I like non politically correct games. When I play a video game, I WANT to be OP, not log a 500 hour struggle just to reach another level where you gain 1 inventory slot (cough)borderlands(cough). Life is a struggle enough, that's why video games are a relaxing dive into a fantasy world (for me)

Anyway great response. I guess I will just be running in offline with fingers crossed, and hope I don't have to mess with the complicated stuff. I dont trust my knowledge enough to start messing with my voltage. Thank you!
