1. I am wondering about the long-term viability of trading. For example, if I am in sector 20 and the best price is in sector 1, it wouldn't be viable to travel that many times to sell my goods!

Trading is a viable way of making money more or less safely, but you need a good warp drive (far and/or fast) and a large cargo hold. A Tradio and a Stellar Assimilator are also a big help. I don't trade unless I can do it in one or two jumps, and only for high-priced goods.

Planetary surveys make money. Asteroid mining with the right equipment and officers can be a gold mine. I make most of my money from quests, followed by surveys, but YMMV, especially before you've unlocked a lot of the ships.
