I remember playing one of these MX vs ATV games back on PS2 and playing with friends in like a free mode. Does this game have it? Or if not which one does if any do? (Over internet not local play)

yes, it has 3 decient sized freeride areas, 1 desert, 1 forest, 1 mountain.
although in my experience freeride modes are usually empty, most people perfer the racing

am i able to make my own and invite a friend to join me?

Yes, and you can also freeride on the SX, MX and FMX maps if you get this (http://www.twisteddirt.com/reflex_dlc_freeride.php). You will be able to invite friends to lobbys even if they don't have this mod.
