Some basic knowledge:
If you are not in a guild you get into one NOW. Several important functions only work after you have joined a guild. +You can get better setup recommedations from there.
Souls. The only souls worth mentioning are lvl 4 for the (very) early game and lvl 6. Everything else should be considered feed for those. You can get setup suggestions from each shikigami's comment section.
Shikigami. To my knowledge there is no setup or shikigami that could be considered better than others. Every shiki/steup can be countered. I can only suggest that you read your shikis skills+comments and think what would work together.
As for PvP, if you are talking about Duel then yes there is no balancing and I believe there will never be any. This game requires a massive amount of luck in addition of time spent to actually playing it. a lucky lvl 40 could easily give an unlucky lvl 60 a run for his money. Duel scores are reset on Mondays so if you want to get higher scores focus your Duel time on weekends and hope for the best.
Yep, I joined a guild as soon as it was available :)
Ok, I've been keeping my 3's, but if 4-6 are the ones worthwhile I'll start using them up, would you consider Shikagami souls or Totem the priority? Rn I have Onikiri /w 4 Shadow grade 5's & 2 nightwing all at +10.
I've found a setup I like for now, with some of the new Shikagami I've been farming.
Onikiri - Ibaraki Doji - Takiyashahime - Momo - Zashiki.
Dueling I'll prob do more when I have most of my main shikagami's at grade 5, but that could be quite some time >_<
Also note, there is one game mode that requires you to have 20 shinigami to run effectively. Keep that in mind, but don't stress about it too much early on.
You want something with a group attack as your first 6 star and fully souled shinigami. Trust me on this, maximizing an initial group blast will do you wonders in PVE and PVP, sweeping up the remains after that first strong hit is easy, especially if you bide your time and use it again when you can.
Some negative here, but these are numbers that everyone should know in regards to how much effort it'll take to fully develop a shinigami. The lowest level one starts at is 2 stars. Sometimes you can draw one at 3 stars, and even 4 stars if you're lucky. (Not sure if you can ever draw a 5 or 6 star shinigami strait, never had that luck) But you shouldn't count on pulling anything other than 2 stars for this analogy.
Now, to make a 2 star into a 3 star, you need to sacrifice two other two 2 shinigami. Levels on them don't matter. To make a 3 star into a 4 star, you sacrifice three other 3 stars, again, levels don't matter if you get lucky. For a 4 star into a 5 star, you need four other 4 stars as sacrifice. For 5 star into 6 star, you need five 5 star sacrifices.
Now, that means each 3 star is worth three 2 stars. Every 4 star is worth twelve 2 stars. Every 5 star is worth a whopping sixty 2 stars. For one 6 star, a singular 6 star, you'll need roughly 360 2 star shinigamis. That means for a full team of five 6 stars, you'll be needing 1800 2 star shinigamis to get there. And for that one mode that requires 20 to run to the full extent, you'd need 7200 2 stars.
Now, obviously there are ways to lower that number. Grade Duramas can be bought and obtained at 3 star, 4 star, and 5 star ranks if you get lucky. Still, maxing a shinigami out is a major investment, and you should be certain that what you're investing in is something you can stand to look at and use for the long haul.
