is this a drifting game?
the store videos look very drifty. corners i'd proably try round vs drift in other racing games and it says it's made by the creator fo absolute drift.

drifting is certainly possible but it's definitely not the fastest way through the stage, and since this is a rally game, drifting is more for fun, rather than the focus.

the players with the absolute fastest stage times maximize grip and therefor drift as little as possible. for most players there's likely some controlled loss of traction to help correct driving lines, corner exits, recoveries and the like.

so no, it's not a drifting game like absolute drift or many of the other drift specific games on steam, but drifting is definitely possible and fun.

so this game doesn't have drifty physics where the back end swings out easily then?

It does! There is a lot of sliding in rally, so naturally you can pull off drifts with a rally car. Some cars just do it better, others not so well. Same in art of rally.

My understanding is that in dedicated drift games cars / mechanics are tuned differently, so it's possible to not break drift for minutes. If you're looking for that, I doubt that's easily achievable in art of rally, but long drifts are definitely possible. Just take a look at the Artwork section here!

But as fidelio said, art of rally is a rally game, not a drifting game, so while drifting is possible and could be very satisfying, you won't get any in-game rewards for doing it.

The game has very realistic driving physics, grip, effects of weight shifts and stuff like that is very right. On the other hand it's no sim, there's a lot of quirks.

So basically, drifting is about as easy/hard/doable as it is in real life, but just like in real life, a huge drift is not the fastest way through a turn.

i was looking more like sim-cade with classic handling like NFS III hot pursuit 1997, more grip over drift/slide. i'll just see if i can't try the game before buying. wanted to ask before writing it off because i like supporting small devs who support linux.

The handling in this game itself is far closer to full sims, than most games that go under the sim-cade category.
Have a look at a video or two of my WR runs for the simplest way to tell what the gameplay is like. Here's one of a tarmac stage so minimal sliding: https://youtu.be/wAHEJDQSTqw
