And yes, you should get a controller. The game is much better when you can modulate the throttle and steering input as opposed to on/off.
however, if one expects a full gas with no consequences arcade game, this is not it.
Thank you for your answers guys !
I'm fairly new to the game and I haven't driven every car yet. I would recommend to practice with the slower cars first, these are the ones I've found easier to handle:
The esky v1 (group 2)
The rotary 3 (group 3)
Le cinq (group 4)
While I've found la montaine and la wedge very difficult to control.
I second that. In my first try I was 5+ minutes behind. I was super frustrated by the handling. After that I watched some tutorials, picked only 2-3 different tracks and played them for about 5-6 hours until I got used to the cars in group 3 and S. So far I have completed career twice and by casually playing I'm already in the top 10 in at least 10 tracks. So it's all about getting used to the handling and finding the right cars for you. I still can't take beautiful turns while drifting, but I guess it will come with time.
I'm just five minutes behind after more than 10 hours aha
If you have a link for some tutorials I'd be glad to watch them, so far I'm only finding reviews or let's play, not much intel on the driving itself. 90° turns are somewhat okay but every other turn and sometime just slightly bending roads feels out of control, whether I push the throttle while turning or not...
I'll be checking posts in the forum too.
It's not just you. I think that's a given for most racing games nowadays. Analogue controls are the real thing, but I'm not comfortable driving with a gamepad. And now that I'm used to the keyboard, I can just lazily play with the arrow keys with one hand and sip on coffee with the other or something XD
The game is fine, tho but it's not Art of Rally. Just complete it, get it 100% and bin it. I think if it gets (semi)realistic graphics, no seeing what's ahead, pacenotes and more technical or/and speedy tracks it can be a potential Indie GOTY. It needs a learning curve, thrilling moments and such.
There are enough of those games tho. The top-down camera, the minimalistic art style and the soundtrack in art of rally are meant to create an experience that is completely different from those games. It seems that's not the experience you're looking for.
For me there aren't really any 'oh-****'-moments in other racing games either once I go through a track once. Especially with the pacenotes always telling you what's ahead. So I don't really understand what you mean by boring. Is it too easy for you to get in the online top 10 for every track in art of rally or is it something else?
