Worst driving gameplay ever ?
Hi,

I just wanted to check if anyone had struggled a lot to control the cars in this game ? It seems to me like they're all completely uncontrollable each time I'm making a turn, which sucks all the fun out of this game and will eventually make me uninstall it. Too bad because apart from driving, which is basically the game, everything else is awesome. I'm also asking myself if playing with a keyboard sort of makes it harder/handier ?

Cheers

You just need to keep practicing, I have over 1000 Km in 3 cars and I'm still making mistakes, but the cars handle well. Try disabling the assists, I know it sounds weird, but it makes the cars more predictable.

If you have ever played other rally games you would know that turning is not really about the front wheels. It's more about flicking into a turn and controlling the rotation with the throttle. I do struggle with smooth cornering in a few cars but it's not too bad. Try messing with different stability settings until you find something that works for you.

And yes, you should get a controller. The game is much better when you can modulate the throttle and steering input as opposed to on/off.

everyone comes to the game with different expectations of what the handling will be or should be, but in the end, nothing beats a bit of practice to understand what the handling is, along with how incredibly fun and rewarding it can be.

however, if one expects a full gas with no consequences arcade game, this is not it.

I'll try to play without the assists then, haven't mess around that much with that setting, but I was expecting that disabling it would make it worse. For now I don't have a controller and I'm on budget so I'll keep playing a little with the keyboard — I wasn't waiting for an arcade type of game but taking more than 6 hours without improvement to get a grip on how to drive seems kind of too much. I'll stick with the same car for now so maybe I'll get use to it.
Thank you for your answers guys !

It takes some time to learn and sometimes is frustrating but once you start drifting nicely and improving your records it gets rewarding.
I'm fairly new to the game and I haven't driven every car yet. I would recommend to practice with the slower cars first, these are the ones I've found easier to handle:
The esky v1 (group 2)
The rotary 3 (group 3)
Le cinq (group 4)
While I've found la montaine and la wedge very difficult to control.

Thank you, I'm trying with the esky for now. A relative will hand me a controller in January too, so I'll be able to compare the gameplay with the keyboard one. Seems like you can't have some sharp directions just with the keys (or maybe I need to play more and that will improve ? I'm curious wether people can get good times with a keyboard.)

there are keyboard players in the top ten leaderboard standings on just about every stage in time attack, so yes, people can get good times with a keyboard.

It's more "inconvenient" with a keyboard because throttle and turning are not analogue. So you have to tap throttle and sometimes steering a lot to keep a steady speed and not lose control. There are already a few posts here with tips about handling, so just look them up.

I second that. In my first try I was 5+ minutes behind. I was super frustrated by the handling. After that I watched some tutorials, picked only 2-3 different tracks and played them for about 5-6 hours until I got used to the cars in group 3 and S. So far I have completed career twice and by casually playing I'm already in the top 10 in at least 10 tracks. So it's all about getting used to the handling and finding the right cars for you. I still can't take beautiful turns while drifting, but I guess it will come with time.

I'm just five minutes behind after more than 10 hours aha
If you have a link for some tutorials I'd be glad to watch them, so far I'm only finding reviews or let's play, not much intel on the driving itself. 90° turns are somewhat okay but every other turn and sometime just slightly bending roads feels out of control, whether I push the throttle while turning or not...
I'll be checking posts in the forum too.

Maybe just me but I wouldn't recommend playing with keyboard. I played with controller and was fine even being new, took me about 2 stages and was already doing pretty well. Tried keyboard after and I just couldn't do it.

It's not just you. I think that's a given for most racing games nowadays. Analogue controls are the real thing, but I'm not comfortable driving with a gamepad. And now that I'm used to the keyboard, I can just lazily play with the arrow keys with one hand and sip on coffee with the other or something XD

I'd just love if controlling your car was about 50 percent more easier in general. Bought the game because I though It was like an arcade racer I could zen out to & relax with. It's anything but.

Track Mania might be more for you.

The driving is ok. I like that the car has weight. What I do not like is the boring tracks and that I can see too far ahead, so there's no 'oh-****'-moments and all that. The part of rally is endurance, man vs nature, not knowing whats coming up. Miss pacenotes/co-drivers lots.

The game is fine, tho but it's not Art of Rally. Just complete it, get it 100% and bin it. I think if it gets (semi)realistic graphics, no seeing what's ahead, pacenotes and more technical or/and speedy tracks it can be a potential Indie GOTY. It needs a learning curve, thrilling moments and such.

There are enough of those games tho. The top-down camera, the minimalistic art style and the soundtrack in art of rally are meant to create an experience that is completely different from those games. It seems that's not the experience you're looking for.

For me there aren't really any 'oh-****'-moments in other racing games either once I go through a track once. Especially with the pacenotes always telling you what's ahead. So I don't really understand what you mean by boring. Is it too easy for you to get in the online top 10 for every track in art of rally or is it something else?
