Do you play with Automatic or Manual Transmission?
Which do you feel is better?

I tend to lean on the Automatic because it allows me to focus more on the corners and control of the throttle and brakes without having to worry about the gears.

However I'm not sure if you can go faster by using Manual rather than Automatic.

most tracks auto!

Manual.

Defo gives me more control through corners.
I use manual on all driving games. If I went auto, my driving would def suffer due to muscle memory and thumbs not knowing what to do lol
edit: should mention I play with all assists at minimum, so the extra control manual gives might help more.

In every racing game I play, I always select manual when its an option. I drive a manual in real life, so having it in games helps me for focus, immersion, engagement, and better control over the vehicle.

In my opinion, you can go faster with a manual trans in racing games because you can make sure youre in the power band at all times, or that youre out of the power band to prevent wheel spin while still having full-throttle. Autos do a great job, and those are some reasons why I prefer manual. :)

Manual, played too much Absolute drift (which you can play in automatic but ultimately you want manual for perfect drift-control).

Switched to manual a while ago, on other racing games too. I've bound gear up/down on the right thumbstick.

Manual.

All the controls are defaulted except shifting and clutch.

Shift up - Right analog up
Shift down - Right analog down
Clutch - Left Bumper

I'd say manual is the way to go. I tried auto and it is quite nice too, but you never want unexpected gear changes when you are sideways.

manual, also a controller is a must for analogue input

Hmm it would be close to using sequetial stick shift as real rally cars do, but also would be a disadvantage as you are moving more to do the same job. You'd also be using a less prominent part of the thumb's muscle group.
And isn't left bumber clutch as default? If he meant that he is using left trigger, that would be a problem as you'd be giving up the button with the most travel and pressure spectrum.
It is hard to get used to the default layout, but it also seems to be the best one overall. Maybe there would be a way to incorporate some gyro for sensitive steering, though.

Auto. This isn't a sim and its about fun, so the easier it is the more fun it is (to me).

(Didn't read through the comments)

I started with automatic for the same reason: Had to get used to the whole thing.

Over time, though, I felt lack of control and manual gave that. Short shifting for example, can help a lot with throttle control in rain or on snow. Especially with the increasingly powerful cars. In rain and on snow, I go through the corners 1 gear higher than usual.
