As you say, first they have sony to tackle, whilst the game wasn't a sony exclusive title as in they owned they rights exclusively, it was just exclusively on playstation, it sounds the same but it is different in meaning. It's like buying your favourite snack from a shop, only one shop stocks it but the company who make it could go to other shops, just they don't (or wont). Effectively it could ship on Nintendo or Xbox as it eventually did to steam.
The issue here is, Sony's push for censorship in gaming sets a example to others, so basically, despite the rule is only on their console, Microsoft are expected from a moral stand point to do the same. Take Gal Gun, they re-released their first title recently, it was going to go uncensored on Xbox but last minute they cancelled the games release (like a month before launch) due to concerns over how little the game wasn't censored. The game has 0 nudity, the censoring they are talking about is bra/panties... which can be seen in anything but gaming is a no-no.
Point being Sony nailed the coffin shut here.
Then we have to consider the issue with a lot of these games from Japan, Sony (or playstation) is their main console over there and Sony going pro censor to win over non-gamer Political correct fanatics has hurt their industry a fair bit but has left many devs afraid to release anything which isn't "safe" by Sony standards. So the industry its self is a bit unknown for now.
Then we get the game its self, I can't/wont speak of how well it sold as whilst i could find the data, i have no comparison to if that's good or bad. Sure you can say AAA games sell x million but this isn't a AAA game and wont sell anything close to that. Sales aside, the game was banned in a few countries, namely Germany, i think Australia also banned it but can't remember, this was again due to censoring issues. The game might not show actual nudity but it does get pretty close.
In short, it's certainly possible but the odds are stacked against it.
However, on a positive note, if the anime does indeed get a sequel (I haven't heard these rumours but i don't follow rumours anyway so would likely never hear it), there is hope that if the sequel does well, it could imply a demand for such a title, and in turn potentially lead to one.
I would just hope the new game is for Nintendo Switch and PC only (unless Xbox want to lay off their censorship rules, then i would be happy to see XB step into this field too). It's sad when Nintendo are slowly opening up to more adult content than the others.
The issue is, if they made a new game, would they cave to censorship?
The devs behind Senran Kagura admitted Sony's new stance on censorship has left the series future in doubt as they can't work around them as the game is built on fan service. Like this title, fan service is a fair part of it.
And sure people can call fans of it all they want but is it not ironic that games like GTA and Cyberpunk which both have tons of nudity and sex are fine but not so big budget games with little microtransactions (like this) aren't? Double standards. You could of course base this on older characters to remove that barrier but it still would be denied as several others have.
thanks, killed all my hope y.y
the game left me really curious about what would happen when they leave the island too
I was thinking the exact same about cyberpunk while playing through it, romance routes and prostitutes are all striaght up s*x without showing any genitals and yet sony looks away cus $$
I wouldn't lose all hopes though, there is always a chance, i try to not lose hope that they killed all games from Japan lol. I hope there is still a chance, especially how more games are coming to steam :D
I'd rather have nothing than a forced bad sequel.
The reality is, games don't need fan service to be good, most don't have it and are brilliant but games like this and Senran Kagura have always used it so heavily that they just wouldn't work in censor mode. So yeah, as painful as it is to say, i would rather no sequel over a Sony friendly version. Shame too as i really like the mechanics of this game.
completely disagree, I suppose it depends on your perspective and what you play these games for. just say senran kagura and i'll be running straight over. i almost bought another ♥♥♥♥♥ ps4 just to play senran x neptunia.
what i would hate is if they censored the pervy humour though, imagining ryona as a respectable upstanding person gives me shivers
While I do agree with your sentiment, the fact is that a lot of people would be upset if the fanservice would be absent or removed. Just look at Mary Skelter 2 PC port.
A lewd fanservice minigame (which consists of "purifying" the characters out of the corruption) had been taken out from the PS4 and PC ports of said game and people are up in arms about it. (even if said minigame is just the fanservice extra)
You just really can't win.
And I would much rather them take time and improve upon the mechaniics in the eventual continuation, thather than what happened to Death End Re:Quest 2, where the whole game was changed entirely. Or Super Meat Boy Forever, a sequel to Super Meat Boy, which changed the gameplay, and as a result, it really isn't as popular as the first game.
Rather than a mediocre or "more of the same" rushed, sequel, I'd rather them not making it.
If the sequel would be worse due to forced changes due in policies, or not bringing anything new.
Atleast they are still upkeeping the valkyrie drive homepage. It was about to expire end of the 2021, but they extended it. So they are still spending money on the servers. That is a good sign for the sequel.
Game itself sold well, despite ban in germany and australia. They are about the same as Kagura even though stats didnt show usa sales.
These are small budget games, like they use clever techniques like visual novel style story telling, what saves them lots of money, so this dont have to sell that much to make money.
Unfortunately Marvelous feels like its not as interested in fanservice games anymore. I think Honey parade is their only studio that has made lewd games lately and they have been more mild than before. I guess that explains why Kenichiro left the marvelous.
Good thing is that Nintendo is more lewd friendly than Sony, so there is still chance.
I am still optimistic about the future.
