Made a mod, but I don't know how to set a thumbnail.

Create a ".jpg" image 128x128 pixels in size named "addonimage.jpg" and place in the root folder of your unpacked mod (outside of materials or whatever other folder/s).

This will be automatically become the thumbnail once the mod is packed into a ".vpk" and either uploaded to workshop, or placed into the addons folder in your local game files.

also i might have done this, but i put in "addon image" and not "addonimage"

edit: also can you tell me how to resize a window of L4D2 Authoring Tools? It's usually too big for me to even make edits of my existing mods

Right click on your taskbar, open taskbar settings, and under 'Taskbar location on screen' select left or right. Drag the workshop manager window up to as high on your screen as it can go, and you should just about see the checklist button on the bottom (it would usually be covered by the taskbar). After selecting it, hit the tab key three times and then hit enter to update your addon.
If you don't use Windows or this doesn't work then idk what you could try, but I had the same problem and this worked for me
