What should be the exact dimmensions of a thumbnail for a mod?
I made a thumbnail but it was too big and stretched (it's my latest mod: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=877901247) so what should be the exact size to get the whole image to fit? I don't have problems resizing or anytthing, just want to know the exact dimmensions that Valve requires.

Open the Workshop Manager.
Publish an Addon.
Look at the Preview Image Box: READ the text in the empty box which tells you the exact size the image will be (and hence the size your image should be if you don’t want it resized).

Dimensions are in pixels per side.

You literally had to ignore Valve telling you the answer on the way to publishing.

Thanks though. :tank:

The Workshop Manager always rescales you thumbnail to 640x320 pixels.
Your image would be scaled to 640x320 also if it is sized 1024x1024 e.g. - and that is where the stretch comes in.

So keep the proportions 2:1

The workshop uploader saves the thumbnail under \SteamApps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\bin\l4d2_workshop_manager\ before uploading. If you put a 640x640 .jpg with the same name in there and write protect it, the uploader will take that instead.

It won't show up in-game though.

Nice find, thanks.
I test it with 512x512 instead and it works better. It doesn't have black bars on the addon page.

That tank is on the SteamVR Workshop, which has a different aspect ratio set for the images (and the uploader is also broken there). If you check one of my L4D2 mods, it should show up the right way.

I tried many attempts using this information but it really doesn't work for me and I keep getting 640x320 instead of the 640x640 as the uploader keeps resizing them. I'm probably not understanding this method like the write protect it and putting the same name part. Does the write protect it mean renaming the jpg and adding "protect it" to the 640x640 .jpg name or something else. The thumbnails save after you press the upload button into 640x320_thumb .jpg. Also what jpg file am I supposed to have the same name with?

I would just like some clarification. Thank You. :2lamp:

You can wriite protect a file by right click -> properties and ticking the write protect attribute. The thumbnail gets named after your vpk file name the first time you upload it, and after the workshop ID when updating it, so you just have to match format it uses.

I don't really see the 'write protect' attribute in the jpg properties. All I see is 'Read-only' and 'Hidden' tick boxes. Do I tick those?
Rectus Jun 26, 2019 @ 10:47am
It's the read-only one.

Just wanna say that you can have a GIF Thumbnail by renaming the file.gif to file.jpg and then following the steps by Rectus
For size limit, I'm not sure. So far I have uploaded one that is 5+ mb

I tried your method and it's worked first time, now I want to replace a better quality gif thumbnail but got "Failed to uploading file" everytime. Renamed both original and workshop ID ones but no luck. Any idea?
