how do yo add friends?

With the Steam window open, look to the bottom-right, where you will see a "View Friends List". Click this. Once you do that, a new window will open up. From there, look at the bottom of the window, where you will see a "Add A Friend" option. Click it, then you can add your friend(s) by player name, account name, real name, email address or profile url.

You can also press Tab+Shift during a game, and a you can view a list of recent players you've played with.
